Half of Brits believe that people are nicer now than before the pandemic, but two thirds say they feel pressured to help others
Soda Folk, the creators of 100% natural sodas, has uncovered what it means to be good in Britain today in the midst of a global pandemic.
It appears the lockdown has made us a more selfless nation as a whopping two thirds of us (64%) are planning on carrying out more deeds once the pandemic is over. Moreover, nearly half (48%) believe we’ve become kinder as a nation during the pandemic – a rather positive legacy.
However, the majority of us have felt pressured to do good, with 68% feeling like they could have, or should have done more to help others. More shockingly, over half (53%) admit to lying about doing a good deed to give themselves a false sense of achievement.
More broadly, the findings also reveal that the average Brit carries out 10 good deeds a year and that honesty, loyalty and kindness are considered the hallmark traits of a ‘good person’. In addition, despite millennials (18-34 year olds) being labelled ‘snowflakes’, they are actually the kindest generation; a third (34%) have claimed they’ve helped someone in the past 24hrs versus just a fifth (21%) of baby-boomers (45-60 year olds).
Top 10 good deeds according to Brits in 2020 include:
-
Saving someone’s life
-
Donating an organ
-
Fostering or adopting a child
-
Donating blood
-
Volunteering your time
-
Chasing after someone when they’ve dropped something
-
Giving money or food to the homeless
-
Setting up a charity
-
Donating to charity
-
Helping a neighbour, friend or family member out with DIY
Using these findings we’re launching Soda Folk’s Good Manifesto, celebrating the people in our communities that are the goodest of all. Created by the people for the people.
Simon Waterfall, Managing Director of Soda Folk, said: “We wanted to uncover what ‘good’ really meant to people in 2020. In a tumultuous year, it’s positive to see so many of us carrying out good deeds and wanting to do more. A key reason behind why people do these is because it makes them happy to make others feel better. Based on our findings we’re launching the Good Manifesto championing do-gooders and inspiring everyone to do more in their communities. This means we can continue providing Good Soda to Good Folk who do Good Deeds”.
