MANCHESTER VOTED THE BEST NIGHT OUT IN THE UK AFTER LONDON, ACCORDING TO GEN Z BRITS

New research of the nation’s night owls, by Malibu Rum, has revealed the best city in the UK for a great night out, with the capital, London, taking the top spot with 43 percent of the votes.

Home to world famous clubs such as Fabric, the Ministry of Sound, Heaven and Cargo, London has been seen as a clubbers’ paradise for decades.

Following closely behind was Manchester (31 percent) – a city that arguably completely revolutionised the club scene back in the late 80’s and early 90’s and is home to venues such as the legendary Hacienda.

Scottish city Glasgow (nine percent) also made the list of the best cities for painting the town red, as did Birmingham (16 percent) and Leeds (12 percent).

Liverpool also rated highly in third spot (19 percent) and Geordies will rejoice as Newcastle upon Tyne (12 percent) was also selected as one of the best places for nightlife, as was Cardiff (nine percent) and Sheffield (five percent). Malibu will be teaming up with universities in each of these cities, making sure students are enjoying the best nights in the country, whilst staying safe.

Malibu has conducted this research as part of its #GoodVibesOnly campaign with the rum brand also teaming up with TV stars Joey Essex and Olivia Attwood, spreading awareness of how students can keep safe as they start university life.

Joey and Olivia are also launching Malibu’s #GoodVibesOnly Awards to reward those mates who go the extra mile in making sure their crew are supported on a night out. Whether it’s the friend who knows the best spot in town for post-night out pizza, the pal who always checks you got home safely, or the mate who gives you a much-needed bathroom pep-talk, give them the spotlight they deserve by heading over to the Malibu Instagram page @maliburumuk.

This ties into the good news that 89 percent of the young Brits polled admit there’s a member of their friendship group who always looks out for everyone else, making sure they get home safely.

Joey Essex says “There’s nothing more I enjoy than a night out with friends, and when Malibu came calling to ask Olivia and I to be part of its Mali-crew we jumped at the chance. It’s so important for uni students to stay safe as they enjoy nights out, and it’s brilliant to see Malibu shining a light on safety through its #GoodVibesOnly campaign”

Modern Brits also admit they love wearing a brand-new outfit for a night out (38 percent) and the rush of hearing one of their favourite tracks come on while in a club (38 percent) is another winner.

37 percent of Gen Zs like to go out for a meal first with friends before hitting the nightlife, while 35 percent enjoy having something to celebrate together, like a birthday.

Meanwhile almost a third (34 percent) claim that getting ready with friends before they head out for the evening is as much fun as the time they spend out.

And this is just as well considering that on average, men take nearly an hour to get ready – 54 minutes – and young women can spend up to an hour and 22 minutes before heading out.

The study also revealed that Gen Z Brits will try on at least three outfits before deciding on ‘the one’, will take 11 photos or videos during a night out and will post on social media at least four times.

Wearing shoes which don’t hurt your feet (34 percent) and enjoying a cheeky kebab at the end of the night (30 percent) also make for a top night.

Meanwhile the bright young things of today aren’t shy and retiring – they enjoy at least five nights out a month on average, meaning they are out most weekends and for at least one cheeky night a week.

So, it’s no surprise that a third of the 1,000 Brits polled aged 18-25 admit that getting out and about with friends is one of the biggest pleasures in life.

Knowing you’ve got an Uber or taxi ordered to take you home safely scores highly on the list (24 percent). With this in mind, and in a bid to increase safety for students, Malibu has secured 11,000 £10 discount vouchers with Uber for students, as well as putting on Malibu Tuk Tuks to get Freshers home from Revolution in Newcastle, Sheffield, Cardiff, and Liverpool.

Meanwhile staying safe is a key priority for almost three quarters (73 percent) of the young Brits polled, with over a third (35 percent) admitting they’ve often felt unsafe while out.

In fact, nine in ten (91 percent) of the young women polled said they’d been made to feel vulnerable, with 35 percent admitting it’s happened many times.

Marnie Corrigan, Brand Director for Malibu Rum, which conducted the research said: ” This year, we wanted to shine a light on how students can enjoy #GoodVibesOnly, as they start off their university lives. It’s interesting to note where, and what, resonates best with modern Brits and the elements that make up a great night – whether it’s a brand-new outfit, a great playlist, or knowing you have a safe ride home at the end of the night. As the brand which encourages people to ‘Do Whatever Tastes Good’, we’re all about living life in a way that makes you happy.

Our research showed us that nine in ten young women have felt vulnerable on a night out, which is staggering and something we really want to look to change. That’s why Malibu has launched this campaign – to give students the means to keep themselves, and others, safe, whilst still maximising the fun.”

The research also revealed that 58 percent of people polled feel pubs, bars and clubs should be doing more to make women feel safe and secure.

It also demonstrated that 28 percent of young women have completely cancelled a night out because they’ve felt unsafe walking the streets or inside a bar or pub.

Malibu is partnering with Good Night Out, the campaign for safer nightlife, who have provided its ambassadors and bartenders across the UK with their specialist training programme on understanding, responding to and preventing sexual harassment and assault on nights out.

Malibu has also partnered with Vita Coco, to give away free coconut water to students enjoying nights out in Newcastle, Sheffield, Cardiff and Liverpool at Popworld and Revolution, to keep them hydrated.
