Me time, what’s that? British women spend less than 1 hour a week on themselves

Royal Philips (NYSE:PHG, AEX:PHIA) has today revealed that almost a quarter (23%) of women spend less than an hour a week on themselves without distraction, despite 80% thinking self-care has a positive impact on their mental health.

Although British women
are aware of the importance of self-care, many find they are not able to prioritise this aspect of their lives, with
the figures from Philips revealing that women spend less than 1% of their week on themselves.
Instead, women are feeling the pressure to complete life admin tasks (42%), work tasks (28%) or catch up on unread WhatsApp chats (19%)
ahead of their own self-care.

The benefits of self-care

The findings revealed the many benefits of self-care. Almost half of UK women said that when they’re able to take time for themselves they sleep better (48%),
are a better partner or friend (37%), and even have a stronger sense of perspective (28%). On top, nearly half (44%) admitted to feeling more confident.

When women can take time for themselves, or do something outside of their daily routine, they prioritise spending more time with loved ones (35%), spending time outside
(32%), or taking up a new skill (16%) or hobby (15%).

Making it personal

To really get behind women across the UK and encourage them to take time for some self-care, Philips Lumea has teamed up with TV personality, Love Island
star and mum, Olivia Bowen.

In support of the campaign, Olivia said:
“Women in the UK have been brought up to think about literally everything else as a priority over taking time for self-care. I personally found this became even worse once I became a mum, as I now had to worry about someone else more than myself – resulting
in an impact on my overall mental health.

“To ensure I’m at my best – for myself and for those around me – I’ve learnt to prioritise moments of self-care and love finding ways to save time on
tasks. One of my best investments to get more me-time was the Philips Lumea IPL 9900 series. Removing my hair makes me feel more confident, but I was spending so much time a week in the shower doing it or travelling long distances to a salon just for a 10-minute
appointment. Now I can do this from the comfort of my own home and the time I save on hair removal in the long term, I’ve been able to give back to myself to do what I want to do.”

The Lu-ME-a effect

The Philips Lumea IPL 9900 Series reduces hair regrowth for users to enjoy 12 months of hair-free smooth skin3,
so they can spend the time they would usually spend on hair removal, doing things that make them feel good.

Chloé Fallon, Beauty Expert at Philips, said:
“It is shocking to see that despite the increase in awareness around the importance of self-care on both physical and mental health in the recent years, women still feel unable to dedicate time to what makes them feel good, having to instead prioritise others
and mundane day-to-day tasks.

“At Philips, we don’t want to add removing unwanted hair to that list of growing daily demands, which we know can be a weekly, and sometimes daily, chore.
Which is why our Philips Lumea IPL devices have been expertly designed to be a long-term, time-saving solution for those who choose to remove, reducing hair regrowth for 12 months of hair-free skin3.”

Worth the self-investment?

Time-poor women across the UK picked three areas that they would be willing to invest in to save time and see long term results: long term hair removal (33%),
teeth whitening (31%) and meal prep plans (21%).
