Explora Journeys Launches Explora I, Touts Sustainable Luxury

The impeccable Explora I has set sail on its maiden voyage on August 31st. Leaving from Copenhagen to Hamburg, the ship will spend weeks exploring what Northern Europe offers before crossing the Atlantic. It will travel through North America and the Caribbean before returning to Europe next summer.

The ship boasts features and amenities geared towards creating a more sustainable future for the cruise industry, which is an admirable goal in today’s world of corporate social responsibility. Explora Journeys aims to maintain its quality of service and luxury offerings, along with its Ocean State of Mind Philosophy – a holistic approach to slow travel. By emphasising immersing oneself in their destination, the company values creating experiences that connect passengers with their surroundings. This ideology is precisely why they have put sustainability and luxury at the forefront of Explora I’s conception and creation.

A ship for the modern age

Transatlantic travel poses many benefits for residents of the UK. Grant Shapps, the previous Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, explained that whether it’s used to visit family or increase trade, it helps cement ties between the UK and other countries across the world. And while many may choose to fly rather than sail, a state-of-the-art ship like the Explora I can certainly make a good impression on foreigners and British citizens alike.

Being a ship for the modern age, these are just a few of the offerings the cruise has to bring the company’s sustainability goals to life:

New fuel sources

Historically, a ship’s engine is powered by fossil fuels such as coal and petrol. Explora I, however, makes use of liquified natural gas. Research from the National Technical University of Athens suggests that this fuel source can lessen carbon emissions by 20% to 30%, making it more environmentally friendly. When paired with the ship’s hybrid engine, it can be estimated that it would need less fuel overall, lessening Explora I’s effect on its surroundings during its voyage.

Power-saving equipment

Its fuel efficiency certainly won’t affect any of the passengers on the ship. The Explora I is equipped with energy-efficient appliances and devices. This allows the crew to provide a wide range of services and offerings that can contribute to making one’s stay on the ship as enjoyable as possible.

State-of-the-art waste management

One study from WWF Canada found that cruise ships generate 147 billion litres of harmful remains each year. This includes food, sewage, and other trash. The Explora I wants to target this issue by using advanced waste management technology, such as their water treatment system, which can prevent the introduction of invasive species in the ocean. Their solid waste management tools also feature a comprehensive reduce, reuse, and recycle plan.

Sustainability at the height of luxury

The changes made to the Explora I towards sustainability don’t detract from the ship’s capability to bring luxury. Like many cruises, it has a wide range of amenities ready to be used by passengers. Those who want to get beautiful views of the ocean’s horizon can make their way to the multiple viewing decks on board. Guests will enjoy a good time with the ship’s 64 cabanas, three outdoor pools, and other well-being and fitness areas at sea.

The ship also houses 12 bars, cafes, and restaurants of different cuisines, bringing a taste of the world at sea. This is outside of the 11 fine dining options that are also available. After eating, passengers can go to the different wellness amenities, including spas, gyms, and a salon.

With all this offered in an environmentally friendly vessel, the Explora I perfectly balances clean, green, and lavish travel.
