St Mark’s students celebrate excellent GCSE results
Staff and students at St Mark’s Church of England Academy in Mitcham, part of Anthem Schools Trust, are celebrating a fantastic set of GCSE results.
The percentage of students achieving a Grade 4 or above and Grade 5 or above in English and Maths is 67% and 48% respectively. These figures now exceed the national average and have increased by 9 percentage points at Grade 4 and above and by 13 percentage points at Grade 5 and above since 2023.
As always, students have made outstanding progress from their starting points across all headline measures and within all subjects.
Students at St Mark’s, which has just been rated as “Outstanding” by Ofsted, join teenagers across the country who are getting their results after sitting exams throughout May and June.
Among the high performers or achievement of note at St Mark’s include twins:
Joanna Martindale has attained a grade 9 in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, French, Geography, Maths and RE and a Grade 8 in English Literature. Joanna will remain at St Mark’s Sixth Form in 2024 to study A Level Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology
Lydia Martindale has been awarded a Grade 9 in Biology, Chemistry, English Literature, French, History, Physics and RE and a Grade 8 in Maths and English Language. Lydia will remain at St Mark’s Sixth Form in 2024 to study A Level Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Other high achieving students:
Steven Webb has secured Grade 9s in Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Physics and 8s in RE, Spanish, English Literature and Language. Steven has enrolled into St Mark’s Sixth Form to study A Level Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
Marina Kemoah has achieved a Grade 9 in Chemistry and RE and a Grade 8 in Maths, Geography and Physics. She will be going to college this September to study A Levels.
Senul Wijayaratne has achieved Grade 9 in Biology, Physics, Chemistry and Maths and Grade 8 in RE. Senul joined the academy in Year 11 at the end of September 2023 from Sri Lanka. He has mastered his GCSE courses in eight months and is staying at St Mark’s Sixth Form to study A Level Maths and Science.
Headteacher of St Mark’s CofE Academy, Hannah Fahey, said: “I am absolutely delighted with our students’ excellent results today and I am very proud of their hard work and dedication.
“These results are justice for the endless hard work put in by every member of the St Mark’s family and every young person in Year 11. This year group was a pleasure to serve and we can’t wait to enrol them into our Sixth Form.
“Despite everything that our students and staff have faced, they have overcome these challenges and their futures remain as bright as ever.
“Their commitment to academic excellence and their determination to excel has resulted in some wonderful results and they thoroughly deserve all they have achieved.
