Merseyside has been officially crowned the UK’s funniest area, according to a new nationwide study analysing more than 500 British comedians. The area boasts an impressive 19.6 comedians per million people, the highest per capita concentration in the country, followed closely by London and Greater Manchester in the second and third spots.

The research comes from digital marketing agency Dark Horse, which mapped comedians by birthplace and adjusted for regional population, and reveals a clear front-runner in the national battle of banter. Merseyside’s legacy of quick wit, working-class resilience, and sharp social satire has elevated it to the top of the UK comedy charts.

The Scouse comedy legacy
Merseyside ranks in the top spot, which aligns with its strong comedic heritage. The region has produced well-known comedians such as John Bishop, Kenny Everett, and Alexei Sayle. Humour plays a significant role in local culture and is commonly reflected in everyday conversation, not just in stand-up performances.

From a list of over 500 British comedians, 31 hailed from Merseyside, which has a population of just over one and a half million people. When that number was normalised against population to show that Merseyside averages 19.6 comedians per million people, it is a clear winner.

London takes second place
London ranks second with 19.2 comedians per million people. In absolute terms, it leads the UK by producing 172 comedians across its 33 boroughs. The capital has been the starting point for acts such as Ricky Gervais, Romesh Ranganathan, Jimmy Carr, and Michael McIntyre.

London’s comedy scene is known for its variety and scale, and population puts it ahead of the rest, with 8.9 million living in the capital. But despite its 172 comedians out of 8.9 mill, that still only comes out to 19.2 professionally funny people per million and means it narrowly misses out on the top spot. While it does not top the list per capita, its national and international influence remains significant.

Greater Manchester holds strong in third
Rounding out the top three is Greater Manchester, with 12.6 comedians per million people. Renowned for its dry sarcasm and understated brilliance, the region has produced comedy giants like Peter Kay, Steve Coogan, and Jason Manford. Greater Manchester beats out Merseyside for sheer numbers with 37 comedians appearing on the list, out of a grand population of 2.9 million; when normalised, it’s not enough to beat London or Merseyside.

Manchester has a long-standing reputation for its distinctive style of humour – honest, deadpan, and self-aware. The city supports a strong comedy scene, with numerous clubs and regular national tours, and continues to contribute significantly to the UK’s comedic landscape.
