Four of the UK’s most haunted roads revealed
There are some places in the world that can be described as having an eerie and mysterious energy. With Halloween approaching, new research by global car rental comparison site DiscoverCars.com showcases some of the most haunted roads in Europe to find out about some of the spookiest roads you can drive through – and four roads in the UK appeared on the list.
DiscoverCars.com has researched some of the most notoriously haunted roads across Europe, and found some harrowing experiences shared on various online forums and social media from people claiming they or someone they know have witnessed paranormal activity while driving.
The research found that one of the most widely reported haunted roads is the Stocksbridge Bypass in South Yorkshire, England. This A616 near Sheffield is known for its ghostly apparition sightings. This road is said to be built nearby or on top of an old monastery, and many have reported seeing a medieval monk wandering around.
The Kinmount Straight in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland is said to be a haunted part of the A75, as some have reported seeing apparitions on the side of the road according to the research. DiscoverCars.com found that those in the trucking industry know this creepy stretch of road well, and often argue that the physical and mental exhaustion from long drives there can play tricks on the mind, which could account for some of the strange and unusual experiences.
The research found that Blue Bell Hill in Kent, England is another spooky road in the UK that some locals believe is haunted by the ghost of a young woman who’s trying to get home. Known by locals as “the ghost of Blue Bell Hill”, there have been reports of drivers stopping to pick up this young woman, only for her to suddenly disappear from the back of the car.
The B3212 road in Dartmoor in Devon, England is another haunted road that made the list. Known as “Hairy Hands”, the research found that for over a century, there have been reports of a ghostly pair of hairy hands grabbing the steering wheel, in an attempt to stir the driver off the road. The research detailed that apparently many locals know of someone who has had a fright on this road.
Aleksandrs Buraks, Head of Growth at DiscoverCars.com, comments:
“As Halloween approaches, now is the perfect time to learn more about Europe’s most haunted roads! Our research found that the UK and Ireland in particular have many eerie roads you can drive through, as the majority of the haunted roads we found are in one of these countries.
“If you find yourself driving down one of these spooky roads, make sure to drive slowly and carefully. Knowing that you’re in an allegedly haunted place might be distracting, so it’s important to pay attention to your surroundings and drive safely. Even more so if you are driving at night, when there’s reduced visibility.”
