Local housebuilder Barratt Homes has been spreading festive cheer at Lime Tree Primary Academy in Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire, by inviting children to create their very own ‘bird feed baubles.’
The fat ball kits will help support bird populations over the winter months at a time when natural food sources are more scarce. To support local wildlife all year round, Lime Tree Primary Academy, close to the housebuilder’s Linmere development, received over 30 bird feed bauble-making kits.
The activity encouraged children to make their very own ‘baubles’ using peanut butter clay, sunflower seeds and wire cages. These were then hung across school grounds for the birds to enjoy.
Miss Lewis, Headteacher at Lime Tree Primary Academy, said: “Our children loved taking part in this activity, as it brings together our love of nature and Christmas. Whilst we are all very much in the festive spirit, we must remember that the winter months are a tough period for bird populations. We want to ensure that as a school we’re doing what we can to support nature in Bedfordshire, and there is no better way than feeding our birds. A big thank you to all at Barratt North Thames, and we look forward to seeing the birds flock to our school grounds over winter.”
Marc Woolfe, Sales and Marketing Director at Barratt North Thames, added: “Our winter project highlights how important supporting wildlife is to us at Linmere. We wanted to do something that celebrates community spirit while also helping children understand how vital it is for birds to have enough food over winter. We hope the pupils enjoyed making their seed ‘baubles’, and we’re excited to hear which birds they spot most often – whether it’s robins, sparrows or starlings!”
