Former Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon has criticised Angela Rayner’s comments of the Labour government.

Speaking on GB News Geoff Hoon said:
“I think it’s a very curious time for someone to be saying this, and I doubt that it’s going to get a lot of attention, given all of the pressures on the government at the present time and the pressures on the Prime Minister.

“I actually think the Prime Minister’s had a very good recent weeks, because what he’s been doing is treading a very difficult line between the United States and the interests of this country, and I think he’s done extraordinarily well.

“Newspapers this morning are saying just that, that this is a prime minister who’s calm in a crisis, who’s dealing with a series of problems internationally, extremely well.

“So for Angela to make this point at this stage, actually, I think it’s a serious mistake by her.

“But this is politics at a time when the country is facing a huge international crisis. How do we deal with the United States, our longest and strongest ally, at a time when President Trump is making serious criticisms of the United Kingdom’s leadership?

“We’re facing increases in prices as a result of difficulties with petrol and gas coming from the Middle East. This is not a time to be engaged in this kind of internecine political warfare.

“I think making her comments at this stage, when internationally things are so difficult for the United Kingdom, will not actually win any favour with Labour MPs.

“Labour MPs face a choice. Do they believe that it is necessary to follow the Conservative playbook of a series of different prime ministers, one after the other, pushed out because another faction wants to succeed.

“Or do they recognise that at this stage in Britain’s situation, Keir Starmer is our best hope of stability, of someone who’s calm in a crisis, who can keep the country on track.”
