Is Angela Rayner drunk better than Keir Starmer sober? asks Jacob Rees-Mogg

Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg has suggested that Angela Rayner has charisma that resonates with voters after she was spotted in a bar in Parliament.

He said on GB News: “Is Angela Rayner drunk better than Keir Starmer sober? That’s the question doing the rounds in Westminster today, because the Daily Mail had a story that dear old Angela was enjoying herself a little bit too much in the Strangers’ Bar, and had a contretemps with a door as she was leaving.

“Now this is denied by Angela’s friends who say that she just had a very small glass of dry sherry and was not in the least bit influenced by this.

“But it does raise the whole question of charisma, what the young call riz. And does Angela have riz? Keir Starmer is as dull as ditch water; he can’t get anything right. Poor man, everything he does turns to dust and wormwood.

“He can’t even appoint an ambassador to the United States of America without finding that the person he appoints is a great friend of a paedophile. He can’t send people to the House of Lords without having similar problems.

“Everything he does goes wrong, and yet Angela seems to be able to do things that would be disastrous for other politicians. She has a run-in with the HMRC. She may not drink too much in the Strangers’, and it just adds to her pizzazz, the feeling that she’s a character in a world of grey and dull politicians, and that’s helping her.

“And I think we do live in a world where people like their politicians who stand out. Why do people like Nigel Farage so much? Not because he never has a drink. He has a drink and he has a smoke, and they feel that he’s a normal sort of person.

“Heaven knows why they like Zack Polanski when he’s perhaps hypnotised them all to think that he’s so splendid.

“You see what I mean? It’s about characters, not necessarily ones that one would admire, but it’s about them having a force of personality.”
