Richard Tice Pays Tribute to Police Officers Killed in Middlesbrough Wrong-Way Crash
Reform UK MP Richard Tice has paid tribute to two police officers killed in a crash after a car reportedly travelled the wrong way down a dual carriageway.
Speaking to GB News, Mr Tice offered his condolences to the families and friends of the officers, who died in the early hours of Saturday morning while on duty.
“This is an absolute tragedy, and our deepest condolences, of course, go to the families and friends of those two brave police officers doing their duty, keeping their local communities safe,” he said.
His comments came amid discussion of a series of dangerous driving incidents linked to social media trends, including a similar crash in County Kildare in Ireland in which five young men died in a joyriding incident also linked to TikTok. Irish authorities are now considering legislation that would allow anyone deliberately driving on the wrong side of the road in such circumstances to be charged with attempted murder.
Asked whether Britain should consider a similar approach to keep police officers safe, Mr Tice said the priority should be establishing what had caused the Middlesbrough crash before any changes to the law were considered.
“We must look at what’s the cause of it, what’s the motivation behind some of this apparent joyriding,” he said. “Let’s wait and see what the investigation shows, but if things need more legislation, then obviously that’s the right thing to do.”
He said it was too early to draw conclusions while the investigation remained ongoing. “But at this current time, we’re just in a sad mourning of the loss of those two officers,” he said.
