Betsy named the most popular car name in the UK
Leading family motor group JCT600 has recently conducted a study into the most popular car names in the UK. After a nationally representative survey of 2000 people, JCT600 found Betsy to be the most popular car name in the UK.
Other popular car names included Betty, Penny, Old girl, Freddie, Herbie, Dottie, Daisy, Matilda, Ralph and Tina.
The results also showed that there were some more unique names that people gave their cars including, Ziggy, Wispa, the tank, Misty, Clive and Carlos.
The research also found that 18-24 years olds are the most likely to name their car with 31%, compared to only 10% of those 65+.
JCT600 also found that people in the South-West of the UK are the most likely to name their car with over 24% naming their car in comparison to only 16% in Wales.
The data also revealed that 24% of women named their car compared to only 16% of men. Interestingly, the data also showed that over 30% of people with 5 children or more name their car, perhaps suggesting that bigger families treat their car as one of their own.
JCT600 found that those who drive a MINI are the most likely to name their car (40%) compared to only 15% of Toyota drivers.
John Tordoff, Executive Chairman at JCT600 says, “Cars are a very personal thing for people. It’s an environment that people want to make their own. The personification shows our true love for our cars, making them almost feel like part of the family. It is interesting to see how the younger generation are the most likely to name their cars meaning that a tradition that has been around for a long time seems likely to continue.”
