Better Than Sex: 54% of millennials feel launching their own business compares with, and is even better than sex
Self-employment may have skyrocketed 93.9%* since 2000 but for 27% of self-employed millennials, their sex life has consequently taken a backseat, as they opt to prioritise their work life over their sex life, finds new research by Superscript; the subscription-based, online business insurance provider.
63% of entrepreneurial millennials have been driven towards this dry spell as they have a desire to gain greater control over their schedule (22%), have the satisfaction of building a business for themselves (21%), and want to pursue their ultimate passion by focusing on growing their own business (20%) over sex and relationships. Despite the clear desire to follow their passion, it seems that their spirit for the bedroom has dwindled. But is starting up and running a business really better than sex?
Well, 54% of millennials believe so as they compare the feeling of launching their own business to be better or at least as good as sex itself – and that’s just the beginning, as 27% of self-employed millennials are willing to prioritise their work life over sex life.
For many, the first sale or client win is deemed euphoric as 1 in 2 millennials compare the feeling to be better or at least the same as sex, and when it comes to realising their business is going to be sustainable, 54% feel the same.
The most exhilarating moment comparable to x-rated bedroom antics appears to be the point at which these entrepreneurs turn a good profit*, as 56% find this to be the most thrilling of milestones, with 30% of those describing this to be better than sex.
“The fact that millennials are willing to put their sex life on the backseat to start up and run their own businesses illustrates the intense dedication of the modern entrepreneur. The entrepreneurial lifestyle is clearly much more appealing to those seeking financial freedom and a break from the 9-to-5 in the post-COVID environment, as it has led to many starting up their own small businesses as a result. Business start-ups were up 24% at the end of last year, showing just how much opportunity is out there for those willing to take the leap” says Cameron Shearer, co-founder, and CEO of Superscript.

For those who have already taken the leap – it turns out, 57% are happy to cancel plans with their current partner to prioritise their work. So, if you share a bed with an entrepreneur, expect your plans to be cancelled on more than one occasion!
If you’re dating one, good luck making it official quickly, as another 52% are happy to cancel on a date up to six times to prioritise their business. If patience isn’t a virtue for those being stood up, then you best keep swiping right.
Other sacrifices include birthday events, with 55% admitting to missing up to six or more family events. Booking tickets to an event also doesn’t guarantee attendance as 53% of millennials don’t have any FOMO and would miss a ticketed event if their business needed prioritising.
Shearer adds, “The amount of small businesses buying insurance from Superscript has more than doubled month-on-month since the start of the year. It’s great to see the entrepreneurial spirit grow amongst the so-called ‘snowflake’ generation and proves how in reality, the leaders of the future are just as willing to take risks and make personal sacrifices to be successful”.
