Brit exhibition raises £3,500 to support homeless community
The Stories of the Streets photography exhibition, which shared images of homelessness from the perspective of those experiencing it first-hand, has raised £3,500 through product sales and cash donations to support homeless people. The exhibition, which was held at the intu Broadmarsh Shopping Centre between Friday 17 November and Sunday 24 December 2017, attracted thousands of visitors, many of whom also donated vital products like warm clothing and toiletries.
With the help of local homeless centres Emmanuel House and Canaan Trust, volunteers from the homeless community were provided with a personal disposable camera, enabling them to share their stories with others. All proceeds will be split between the artists through a pay-it-forward scheme, such as secure accommodation or meals for the individual, and re-invested back into the social enterprise to support more people and exhibitions across the UK, with the next exhibition set to take place in Manchester.
Stories of the Streets is organised by People of the Streets CIC, a student-led initiative organised by University of Nottingham students Charles Kerr, Qas Hussain and Alex Greenhalgh, with support from Boots and Kodak. People of the Streets is based in Nottingham and distributes products to cities across the UK.
