Residents of London’s East Village display the incredible ways they’ve tailored their outdoor spaces
Neighbourhood operator Get Living launches competition to find Britain’s best balcony, with a £1,000 prize up for grabs
It comes as lockdown spurs Brits into spending £2.6bn* to liven up their outdoor space
Three jaw-dropping balconies have been unveiled in London’s East Village after residents were inspired to make the most of their outdoor space following lockdown.
The makeovers showcased a complete transformation of the outdoor spaces. The eye-catching designs include a Miami poolside-inspired balcony that comes complete with a chaise longue, ball pool, pink parasol and a decorative flamingo.
Elsewhere in the former Olympic Athletes’ Village, a wilderness-inspired balcony offers the chance to spot the area’s considerable flora and fauna in complete camouflage, shaded by palms and foliage and featuring a convenient set of binoculars.
With theatres closed during the lockdown, one balcony was turned into a theatre-themed space ideal for either people-watching or performing, with red fold-seating, a costume rail, velvet draped curtains and a popcorn machine. This particular balcony was inspired by East Village resident Phoebe Haines, a classical singer who took to her balcony in April to entertain thousands of residents with operatic versions of popular songs such as ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.
The eye-popping creations were revealed as neighbourhood operator Get Living launches a nationwide hunt to find Britain’s best balcony.
Get Living helped its residents realise their most extreme balcony ambitions after being inspired by the ways that East Village neighbours had made use of their outdoor spaces during lockdown.
While the East Village balconies take creativity to the extreme, it seems that people across the UK have been getting creative with their outdoor space. According to new research, the average household has spent £107.29* during lockdown on sprucing up their gardens, terraces and balconies, equating to a massive £2.6bn spend across the UK.
The research showed that 63% of people said they’ve grown to appreciate their outdoor space more since lockdown, spending an additional 30 minutes there every weekend. Some 69% of people have decorated their space, with 35% of those claiming the lockdown meant they finally had the time to do so.
Top 10 ways Brits would like to transform their outside space:
- Add more plants and flowers
- Add a hot tub or swimming pool
- Buy new furniture
- Re-landscape
- Make it more private
- Add lights, candles and ornaments
- Add bean bags or a hammock
- Make it more bird-friendly
- Add a log cabin, man cave or playhouse
- Add a BBQ or pizza oven
Get Living’s hunt for Britain’s best balcony aims to celebrate the best in design, creativity and use of space. The competition is open to anyone with an outdoor space at home and invites people to share photos of their transformed space on Instagram, using the hashtag #BalconyMoment and tagging @SimplyGetLiving in the caption. The winner will receive a £1,000 prize to spend at the home retailer of their choice.
