Celebrities who have Suffered Head Injuries
Of all the kinds of injury you can suffer, a head injury can be the most consequential. It’s here that the brain is housed – and, while the skull is more resilient than most of us think, a head injury can potentially result in serious long-term effects. In many cases, victims can claim brain injury compensation – but it’s better to avoid the injury in the first place.
With that said, many people suffer head injuries every day, and often suffer no long-term side effects. In fact, there are several well-known celebrities who’ve suffered head injuries. Let’s take a look at a few of the more famous faces.
Justin Bieber
In 2012, while running off stage in Paris between songs, Justin Bieber ran into a glass wall and was knocked unconscious. He was said to have been out for around fifteen seconds, but he still managed to get up and finish the set afterwards. The show must go on, after all. He suffered a concussion, but no further harm.
Lady Gaga
As though to prove that life as a touring musician is more hazardous than many of us might think, Lady Gaga was concussed onstage in New Zealand in 2012 when a backing dancer hit her on the head with a metal pole. She apologised to the audience but finished the show. For the sake of pop stars everywhere, we must hope that safety standards have improved since 2012.
Steve Wozniak
In 1981, the Apple co-founder was piloting a small aircraft – or, in the process of taking off – when the engine stalled and the plane smashed into the runway. Fortunately, Woz survived the ordeal, as did the three passengers. However, for five weeks afterwards, he suffered from anterograde amnesia. Unlike retrograde amnesia, which affects pre-existing memories, anterograde amnesia prevents the sufferer from forming new memories. This lasted for around five weeks in this case and is often linked to Wozniak’s decision to leave the company he helped found.
Angelina Jolie
While filming Salt, Angelina Jolie managed to collide with a TV monitor, which hit her between the eyes. She was admitted to hospital but resumed shooting the same day. The following day, according to an interview she later gave to Nightline, she had a bandage on her head, which needed to be painted out in post-production. The accident left her with a permanent, though barely visible, scar.
Roald Dahl
The famous children’s author suffered a concussion before he ever became a writer. Having crash-landed his plane in the desert during the Second World War, Dahl suffered a whole range of serious injuries, including burns, blindness, and a fractured skull. Urban legend has it that this is what lead to his amazing imagination afterwards – though this isn’t a recommended method of creative inspiration.
