Coming out as gay, leaving New Zealand – BBC Starstruck showrunner Alice Snedden’s wild last 3 years

After years away from stand-up (due to the global pandemic and a lack of interest in being out late), Alice Snedden, co-writer and co-director of BBC and HBO’s Starstruck returns to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August with a brand new show.

Alice has been up to, around, through, and about a lot lately. In Highly Credible, the acclaimed New Zealand stand-up will cover the ins and outs of her last three years: from her car getting stolen to dealing with fertility issues, and—of course—some gay stuff. That’s a major thing she has been up to.

Nominated for a Billy T award in 2018, Alice Snedden has since sold out consecutive NZ Comedy Festivals and has established herself as a leading stand-up in the New Zealand comedy scene. Alice made her debut at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2018 to rave reviews, with her Billy T award nominated show Self-Titled. She followed up with her second show Absolute Monster in 2019 before her pandemic enforced hiatus from the live scene.

Before moving to the UK, Alice was head writer of multiple series shows in New Zealand including Jono and Ben (TV3) and Funny Girls (TV3) and was showrunner on sitcom Golden Boy (TV3). She regularly appears on panel shows 7Days (TV3) and Have You Been Paying Attention(TVNZ). Her own TVNZ series Alice Snedden’s Bad News (TVNZ) has received critical praise and popular success. The show recently returned for a two part special tackling climate change.

Alice has supported Rob Delaney on tour in the UK and performed her stand up on the Best Foods Comedy Gala (TVNZ) in Auckland and has appeared on The Now Show on BBC Radio 4.

Alice is the co-writer of the sitcom Starstruck, created by and starring Rose Matafeo, and the co-director (with Rose) of its third season. Starstruck was commissioned by BBC3 in the UK and HBO Max in the US. Season One premiered on BBC One and BBC Three in the UK where it became the channel’s best performing new comedy of the year with over three million requests on BBC iPlayer to date, and later on HBO Max in the US, the show was also pre-sold to over 50 territories including Australia (ABC) and New Zealand (TVNZ). The show is a critical and ratings success.
