This National Apprenticeship Week (7th-13th February), the leading housebuilder is looking to recruit eight bricklayer and eight joiner apprentices to work across its developments.

The 15th annual National Apprenticeship Week is a celebration of apprenticeships across England and is a time to recognise and applaud apprentices across the country.

Throughout the 15 years, National Apprenticeship Week has brought together apprenticeship supporters from across the country, with MPs, ambassadors, apprentices, training providers and top employers involved in recognising the value and importance of apprenticeships.

Luke Gallagher (25), from Manchester, is an apprentice joiner at Barratt Homes’ Willow Gardens development in Tintwistle, Glossop. He is currently studying for his City and Guilds qualification in Joinery and Carpentry at York College.

Luke said: “I believe that Barratt Homes is the leading housebuilder in the UK and I wanted to learn from the best. Its apprenticeship programme is full of learning opportunities, and I wanted to take full advantage of this.

“As an apprentice joiner I work alongside a sub-contractor to learn the trade, but I’m also given the chance to work with other specialists such as kitchen fitters, to further hone my skills.”

Luke is working on site five days a week and attends college in a number of block releases of two to three weeks throughout the year to continue his studies.

Luke adds: “I really enjoy fitting first fixes, roofs and joists, but I look forward to learning how to fit more complex roofs such as hip roofs and furthering my skills with fitting diminishing trusses as my apprenticeship progresses.

“In the future I see myself passing my Joinery and Carpentry apprenticeship and then utilising my new practical skills alongside my pre-existing Masters degree, to join the Barratt Homes Aspire Graduate Programme. Following this I hope to become a site manager and perhaps progress even further within the company.”

Neil Goodwin, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Manchester, said: “The construction industry is continuing to grow, and this is an exciting time for anyone with an interest in housebuilding to join a market leading company.

“We’re really pleased that Luke is enjoying his apprenticeship. He is a fantastic example of how young individuals can excel in a career onsite with the right training and support.

“As one of the country’s top developers we are absolutely committed to developing raw talent and I believe that we have a duty to provide these apprenticeship opportunities.”

All Barratt Homes’ programmes are well structured and tailored to individual needs. Apprentices will receive encouragement, support and guidance to help them develop, giving the skills and qualifications for a successful career.
