Domino’s Pizza Moped Delivery Fleet Goes Electric

15 Domino’s branches across London are using electric mopeds to deliver fresh pizza. The brand began trialling NIU scooters as a sustainable and cost-effective solution in October and have now expanded their fleet to include over 200 of the smart, cloud-connected, purpose-built delivery vehicles.

The scooters were supplied by the NIU flagship store in East London Borough Cambridge Heath. Since launching in 2015 with a crowdfunding run that, at the time, became one of the highest-grossing ever, Chinese NIU Technologies has seen global success. It is now NASDAQ-listed with the likes of Google and Tesla – a company often referenced in conversations about NIU’s smart, urban future.

Domino’s use of the scooters may tip other companies that rely on two-wheeled delivery vehicles over the edge to going electric. Though Domino’s is the first major UK food delivery service to use NIU’s vehicles at scale, it may be a sign of things to come. The chains target is to make two-thirds of its delivery fleet fully electric by the end of 2022. Deliveroo already offers electric scooters as a rental option to its riders and Lime is trialling them in “a handful of cities” across the U.S. NIU store manager Mike Johnson says, “with the right training and charging set up, electric scooters can be safe, practical, and more cost-effective and sustainable than petrol alternatives.”

Domino’s has embraced the new technology with a customised training video to ensure the vehicles are used properly and safely in high traffic and pedestrian areas around London. The video teaches them how to use the digital dash, operate the vehicle, and increase acute rider awareness.

The group has had bespoke charging cabinets made for each store using the scooters to make sure that battery charging is safe and pragmatic. Each moped contains 2 Lithium-Ion batteries and can be charged within 4 hours.

The pizza company recently had its yearly corporate event to introduce the NIU brand to its business partners and franchisees which was hosted by tech vehicle enthusiast Paddy Mcguinness.
