EU Digital Services Act: social media giants under the spotlight with new rules – Comment from global head of social

The European Union’s Digital Services Act (DSA) is coming into force this week – and it’s going to affect some of the world’s biggest tech and social media giants, including Google, Facebook, and TikTok. Chloe McCloskey, global head of social, OLIVER commented:

“Given recent developments at Twitter/X, it will be very surprising if any changes mandated by the DSA don’t cause issues on the platform. Twitter’s leadership has sought to buck the trend on any number of fronts since the company’s sale in October of last year. The almost recalcitrant nature of the platform does not seem conducive to adapting well to massive regulatory change.

“Meta, however, strikes me as being as prepared as it can be – it’s had a long time to work on this, and it’s very important that the business gets this right. Bytedance has already been on a journey when it comes to regulation in the US, so I would expect it to have thrown everything at this.

“The EU is leading the way with the DSA. This monumental piece of legislation will no doubt have an impact on how other countries think about the challenges posed by the massive power these platforms have over the lives of their citizens.”
