Seasonal Affective Disorder: how to create a mood-boosting atmosphere Dr. Naomi Newman-Beinart, PhD Nutritionist (BSc) & Chartered Psychologist

We are officially in the middle of the Winter season and with that comes less daylight, and for some of us, our mood can begin to dip. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of low mood that comes and goes according to the season. Some symptoms of SAD are similar to depression, for example, lack of interest or enjoyment in daily life, less interest in sex and low energy.

It is unclear exactly why people in the UK are more prone to developing SAD than in some other countries but it is assumed that reduced sunlight in the Winter months can cause a drop in serotonin, the “happy hormone”, which can lead to low mood.

There are several ways to treat SAD. You can try to stay on top of this by getting outdoors, eating healthily and trying to stick to regular sleep patterns. But some of us just feel like we need an extra boost to get us through the Winter months. In Winter we all spend more time at home than at any other time of the year. Having a cosy home environment is so important as it can help you to unwind and destress, and can help to counterbalance your hard work with some well-earned rest. Feeling comfortable and happy at home can make a huge difference to your mood, which in turn can help you manage stress and low mood more easily.
