How to maintain your car to deal with British weather

If Brits aren’t commenting on how nice the weather is, they’re complaining about it. The climate in the UK is a challenging one for many reasons – planning holidays, leisure activities and dealing with the numerous storms that hit our shores during the winter. However, the British weather can bring about another challenge in the form of maintaining our vehicles. One day you can be driving in glorious sunshine and the next you’re in heavy snowfall – certainly as spring starts to emerge. This can create tricky driving conditions and wreak havoc on your car maintenance. How can you prepare for all that the British weather can throw at you?

Check your wiper blades

The most common weather phenomenon you will encounter on British roads is rain. It makes roads wet and slippy, dramatically increasing stopping distances and potentially reducing the grip you have on the road. Wiper blades are essential to maintain visibility in the driver’s seat and you should be checking these every few months. It’s probably worth replacing these once every year or 18 months, just to be safe.

Use the right tyres

Tyres are critical in keeping you safe on the road. Sudden and dramatic changes in weather can change driving conditions significantly and your tyres must be able to deal with this challenge. Ensure you have tyres that are suited to conditions all year round or make sure to switch between seasonal tyres when needed. It’s also recommended that you buy tyres that are specifically matched for your make and model; for example, look at Ford Focus tyres if you drive that car and need a replacement.

Keep fluids topped up

The internal systems of your car require a number of fluids to function properly. Engine oil, brake fluid, windscreen wash, coolant – it all has a purpose under the bonnet. By ensuring you keep these fluids topped up to the appropriate levels, youshould be better prepared for anything the British weather throws your way. On those rare days when the UK is blessed with scorching heat and sun, coolant will help to keep the engine cool and stop it from overheating. On freezing days, coolant and antifreeze will help to stop your pipes from dropping below a functioning temperature.

The British weather can be unforgiving and unpredictable, but with a little basic maintenance and preparation you should be able to deal with whatever driving conditions lay ahead.
