The Tournament welcomed players from across the globe in the spirit of inclusion, integrity, friendship, and support which started at a packed opening ceremony at Birmingham Town Hall on Thursday evening ahead of match play on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the festival which is considered Europe’s premier marquee inclusive rugby tournament.
James Anthony, Chair of the Birmingham Union Cup Organising Committee said; “I’m so proud of everyone who has competed as well as those who have contributed to make this year’s IGR Union Cup tournament such an overwhelming event. The tournament committee from the Birmingham Bulls and I would like to thank the players and supporters from all over Europe as well as all of our amazing volunteers who gave up their time to create an event where everyone felt truly welcomed, celebrated, and valued.
I’d also like to thank our sponsors, Specsavers, Birmingham City University, Birmingham City Council, Gaydio, and Purple Frog. But above all, I’d like to thank the city and the people of Birmingham for showing that everyone is welcome and that everyone is equal. You’re alright Bab!”
With a central theme of the tournament being ‘One Love’, the IGR Union Cup 2023 was the first time the European LGBTQ+ rugby community and allies have come together in four years having been postponed from 2021 due to COVID. Birmingham is the ninth host city of the tournament and has created an incredible legacy for future tournaments.”
