Local Londoner leads 31for31 challenge to mark 31 years of Ukrainian independence
This week, London resident and Ukrainian fitness coach, Olga Stignii will embark on her greatest challenge yet – #31for31 – covering 31km each day for 31 days in a countdown to Ukraine’s Independence Day – 961km in total!
August 24th marks Ukraine’s 31st year of Independence from the Soviet Union. Olga, an active participant of running community Midnight Runners and fitness lead at Best Athletics, will run her way to independence in a bid to remind and educate the British public about the ongoing war devastating her homeland.
In February of this year, Russia invaded Ukraine, resulting in the tragic loss of innocent life and bringing war to Europe for the first time in over a century. Raised in Lviv, West Ukraine, Olga has lived in the UK 15 years but her family – like many others – had to flee the war torn country for the sake of their lives, leaving with young children and bidding farewell to fathers, brothers and husbands to seek refuge over the border.
The #31for31 challenge represents 31 years of Ukraine’s independence and aims to highlight a different Ukrainian city affected by the war each day. It is an accessible – and fun – way for anyone wishing to show their support. As Olga journeys 31km each day for 31 days, we can all play a part too. Whether it’s 31 daily sit ups, swimming 31 lengths or walking 31km over the course of the month, or even giving 31 hours of your time to help a Ukrainian charity, we welcome you to be involved.
Commenting on the challenge, Olga explains, ‘Like many Ukrainians I feel helpless, scared, and indescribably sad – for both my family and my country. This challenge will raise money to help those back home. All money I raise will go directly to where it is needed most.’
Her challenge began with a launch event on Sunday 24th July at 10am starting at Parliament Sq, London ending at the Ukrainian cultural club in Holland park and will continue daily until Wednesday 24th August.
