The most iconic slang words of the North

Liverpool – Chocka
Manchester – Our kid
Leeds – Gill
Sheffield – Mardy
Newcastle – Howay

Liverpool is home to more commonly heard slang words such as ‘fella’, which simply refers to a man or boy, and ‘chocka’, which means that somewhere is ‘very busy’.

In Manchester, ‘our kid’ is widely used, with this term being a reference to one’s sibling, along with ‘barm’, which refers to a sort of bread roll.

Leeds is home to ‘gill’, known as a cheeky half pint, as well as ‘scraps’, also referred to as the lovely loose bits of batter in your traditional Northern chippy.

Owing a great deal to the Arctic Monkeys, ‘mardy’ is a popular slang word in Sheffield, an expression used for a moody person. This is alongside ‘chuddy’, which you may remember was a slang term used in school to refer to chewing gum.

As popularised by iconic reality TV show Geordie Shore, ‘howay’ is Newcastle’s iconic slang term, which is an upfront way of saying ‘come on’ or ‘hurry up’.
