Meet The Food Circle Supermarket – Saving the Environment from Food Wastage
The Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD), reported there is an increasing trend in the grocery market towards lower-cost and healthy food shopping. Shoppers are placing more importance on ethical and environmental factors in what they buy and where they choose to shop.
These trends is increasingly becoming a priority to food and drink retailers, a gab which so online surplus healthy food retailer, Food Circle Supermarket is looking to close by offering health and environmentally conscious consumers an ideal solution.
Paul Simpson and James Barthorpe started the business earlier this year. The South Yorkshire born and bred co-founders worked together in the food and drink industry for three years, when they recognised the scale of food waste.
“Our background is in Business Development at one of the UK’s largest surplus food re-distributors, and it was while working there that Paul and I noticed surpluses in the healthy and “free-from” food market were lacking an ideal outlet. A number of organisations re-distribute food but we felt that specifically in healthy food and drink, the supply was out of sync with where the demand lies. Our solution was to find that demand by creating an online store, so we could ensure this food reaches people who really want it rather than ending up as waste” explains James (25).
Saving people money whilst saving food wastage looks to be a compelling proposition; “What we hope to help people by offering a lower cost option of their favourite healthy food products, and to help our environment by preventing as much food waste as possible”
Supply isn’t always consistent as surplus levels of their suppliers vary, but they can pass on significant savings sometimes in excess of 50% off the RRP to the consumer.
