Motorhome and caravan holidays making a comeback amongst Brits

With the school holidays just around the corner and the weather getting warmer in the UK over the coming weeks, caravan and motorhome holidays are proving popular for Brits as they seek different types of holidays due to the rising cost of living.

Data from Auto Trader, the UK’s largest automotive platform, has revealed they have seen a whopping 59% increase in advert views for motorhomes and caravans on their site in the last five years1 as the pandemic changed the nation’s holiday habits.

Showing the growing popularity of a motorhome or caravan holiday, research2 from Auto Trader also reports that around a third of Brits (32%) said that this type of holiday appeals to them with over a fifth (21%) stating that they would like to go on this type of holiday in the next 12 months. A further one in five (20%) are already planning to go on a motorhome or caravan holiday within the next year.

With the cost of visiting restaurants and hotels rising by 6% year on year in the UK3 along with the effects of inflation still having an impact on people’s wallets, Brits interest in going on a motorhome or caravan holiday has increased by over a fifth (22%) since the start of the cost of living crisis.

There is a growing appetite amongst Brits to enjoy more holidays closer to home with over a third (36%) stating that they would like to do more staycations than flying abroad over the next f­­ew years, whilst 14% would like to go on more motorhome or caravan holidays to help reduce their carbon footprint.

Amongst those already going on or wanting to go on a caravan or motorhome holiday in the next twelve months, primary motivations include this type of holiday giving them more freedom (21%), being more cost effective than other types of holidays (19%) and the desire to create new experiences with friends and family (16%).

With festival season underway, 17% would consider staying in a motorhome or caravan when going to a music festival. 14% of Brits also feel that going on a holiday using a motorhome or caravan is romantic and can help strengthen their relationship with a partner.
