Toying with genre in the middle-place between heavy-fringed 80’s Postcard indie and the hairspray-and-teeth, heat haze shimmer of opulent yacht rock, Brighton’s Nature TV return to the beat for the first time in 2023 with new, all-grown-up single, Illusions – OUT NOW via Heist or Hit. Jumping off with a splashy blend of sun-glinting soft soul and tender, mournful melancholy, the ripples emanating from the band’s four-minute pep talk on finding truth in the fog of modern life radiate out towards a brand-new EP, set for release this autumn, UK Tour support dates with Chappaqua Wrestling this month and 11 new October Headline UK Tour Dates.
Setting a newly ambitious tone, Nature TV’s latest, arguably greatest, collection of songs comes from the purposeful, artistic intensity of collective retreat. The four members – Guy Bangham (guitar, vocals), Josh Erişkin (bass), Jimmy Hunt (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Zal Jones (drums) – left the shale and rolling waves of the south coast for the snowy seclusion of Wales’ Bannau Brycheiniog National Park to write and record. The band’s temporary home and studio, a 500-year-old farm house, rattled to the sounds of Nature TV’s blue-eyed alternative pop, accentuating the swells of reverb, chorus and delay and adding fine age to Bangham’s seasoned vocal delivery.
Illusions’ unconventional sense of the downbeat and euphoric, magically matched to listener’s changing moods and suited equally to good days and bad, draws original and instantly addictive sketches over blueprints of The Blue Nile’s sense of warm summer rain romance and The Smiths’ jangling, darkly comedic skits. In this instance, Nature TV’s golden age songwriting offers sage advice for living well in modern times of make-believe.
Bangham says of the single: “Illusions is about how sometimes nothing is as it seems and there can be a facade over everything. Sometimes it can feel impossible to focus on one thing with so many distractions and illusions that send you off down the rabbit hole. It’s crazy out there and it’s only getting weirder, so remember to work on things you can actually work on and not to worry about all the mad stuff.”
With further EP details to be revealed in the coming months, Nature TV plan ahead to autumn and onstage celebrations of their newest collection of songs with an 11-date UK Tour in October. Nature TV’s development as songwriters, studio magicians and a meticulous live band has been lived out in public with heart-on-sleeve sincerity since the heralded arrival of their debut EP ‘proper’, Emotion Sickness, then bouncing prolifically on through four, globally tumultuous years with a further three EPs – Lady Luck, Heartbreak Skyline and Nightshift.
Their unhurried and ongoing rise since first emerging in 2019 has been assisted by their unquestionable finesse as a live band, taking to the stages of festivals such as ILMC, The Great Escape and Wild Paths alongside support slots with respected peers, PINS, Wyldest, CVC, VANT and Swimming Tapes. Following a full UK tour with Liverpool’s Trudy and The Romance, the band last took to the road for their own headline dates in October 2022 where they sold out shows in major UK cities, from Edinburgh to London.
