New data from Cuvva reveals the top 10 cheapest cars to insure
In a bid to help cash-strapped drivers get on the road for less, leading temporary car insurance provider Cuvva has published new data on the top 10 cheapest cars drivers can insure with short-term car insurance.
Cuvva analysed over 600,000 one-hour policies sold in the past year to uncover which cars are the cheapest to insure for an hour with temporary car insurance. With the average cost of annual car insurance hitting a record high of £924 last month, many drivers are looking for more affordable ways to get on the road.
The new data reveals that all of the cars on the top-10 list cost less than £13 for an average hour-long policy. The Ford Ka came out on top, with an hour’s policy costing just £12.05 on average. Several other small cars also made the top 10, including the Fiat 500, Citroen C1, and Peugeot 107.
But drivers who want to get on the road on a budget aren’t confined to compact city cars. On average, a Kia Sportage SUV costs just £12.48 to insure for an hour. The 7-seater Volkswagen Touran is the seventh cheapest car to insure with temporary insurance, at just £12.50 for an average hour-long policy. And family cars like the Vauxhall Meriva and Citroen Berlingo are also cheap to insure for an hour, with average policies costing £12.36 and £12.30 respectively.
Mini lovers are also spoilt for choice, with both the Mini Cooper and the Mini One featuring on the top 10 list. The lower-spec Mini One is the cheapest to insure, costing £12.16 for an average hour’s policy. But drivers can upgrade to the Mini Cooper for only 40p extra, as an average hour-long policy costs £12.56.
Temporary car insurance lets drivers borrow cars from friends and family quickly and simply, so there’s no need for drivers to own a car in order to drive one. As a separate comprehensive policy, the car owner’s insurance and no claims bonus is protected if something were to happen.
According to Cuvva, drivers bought over 2.5 million short-term policies last year via the Cuvva app, across Great Britain.
Darryl Bowman from Cuvva said: “More and more drivers are choosing to borrow cars from friends and family to get around because it’s affordable. The type of car you choose to drive can make a big difference to the price you pay for your insurance too.
Many of the cheapest cars to insure are popular makes and models, like the Fiat 500, so drivers likely know someone with a car they can borrow for less than £13 an hour”
