NEW HOMES COMMUNITY IN GREAT DUNMOW TO SET HIGH STANDARDS FOR SUSTAINABILITY

A Barratt and David Wilson Homes development in Essex is set to be used as an exemplar for sustainable housebuilding with approximately 30% more biodiversity value being created than was there in the first place.

The 326-home community, named Great Dunmow Grange, will provide 8.6 hectares of amenity space and ecology enhancing green space.

Such high standards for sustainability stem from open discussions during the planning stages between Barratt and David Wilson Homes, Great Dunmow Town Council and Uttlesford District Council.
Among the 326 properties being delivered in Great Dunmow are 104 affordable homes, with all houses comprising a mix of one to five bedroom properties, including bungalows.

Ray Houghton, Head of Planning at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Eastern Counties, said: “We’re very excited for work to start in Great Dunmow as it’s going to be a truly unique community with a series of fantastic objectives for biodiversity.

“Delivering new homes in a sustainable and ecological manner is extremely important to us and this development is a huge step towards our goals as the UK’s largest housebuilder.”

To put into perspective the environmental credentials in place in Great Dunmow, the extent of ecological enhancement is three times greater than the government’s current target of 10%.

Over two hectares of sports pitches will be provided, together with a pavilion and associated car parking. Barratt and David Wilson Homes will also be providing 0.5 hectares of serviced allotments.

All homes at the development will comply with Nationally Described Space Standards, with Category 2 accessibility levels. In 5% of the properties, there will be Category 3 accessibility levels which are wheelchair-user friendly, which are built in accordance with Lifetime Homes Standards.

Ducting for electric vehicle charging is proposed for each house. The technology for the charging points is advancing rapidly and grants are available to residents for if, and when, they choose to opt for this facility in the knowledge that the ducting is already in place.

The objectives for Great Dunmow Grange are closely tied to those of parent company, Barratt Developments, which has targeted zero carbon homes from 2030 with an intensified focus on driving carbon emission reduction across its homes, own operations and their supply chain.
