New Local Mural Revealed in Forest Gate
BOLD MURAL BY TALENTED LOCAL ARTIST ADDS VIBRANCY TO UPCOMING NEWHAM SITE
A vibrant new local mural has recently been revealed in Forest Gate breathing life into the hoarding of an upcoming development by Latimer, part of Clarion Housing Group, which launches autumn 2023. The exciting piece of artwork, designed by talented local graphic designer and competition winner Melanie Bartheidel, was installed, to improve the local aesthetic of the Woodgrange Road construction site and reflect the colourful, eclectic vibe of East London.
To find a local designer that fitted the aesthetic of the upcoming development and showcase Newham’s creative talent, Latimer hosted a competition for creatives in and around Forest Gate to create a unique design for the site’s hoarding. After careful consideration, Melanie Bartheidel’s colourful design was chosen to be featured due to its thoughtful arrangement inspired by the local young people of the Forest Gate community alongside topical environmental matters.
Melanie lives and works on Woodgrange Road and splits her professional time working as a graphic designer and an artist. With over 15 years of experience in branding and digital design, her final artwork is the product of her love for the Newham community fusing her art practice and her work as a graphic designer.
Melanie comments: “When designing the artwork for Latimer’s Woodgrange Road site, I envisaged the use of large type integrated into colourful illustrations, and shapes that were bold but still figurative and recognisable. I wanted my design to tell the stories of the community themes I have used, so that the overall piece is symbolic of the thriving community of Newham, which I am proud to be a part of.”
Latimer’s Woodgrange Road development will be constructed over the next few years, keeping with the surrounding Victorian context in the Forest Gate Town Centre Conservation Area. The development will comprise 74 one to three bedroom Shared Ownership apartments, alongside retail space on the ground floor.
Krete Luca, Sales and Regional Sales Director at Latimer, comments, “We recognise the value creative interventions in the public realm can add to our projects and are always keen to facilitate partnerships like this one. Hoarding presents an opportunity to showcase local artists and this impressive mural completely transforms the site on Woodgrange Road. Until the development’s completion, Newham locals will be able to appreciate her design, which is a reflection of our investment into the borough’s rich cultural scene.”
