Hybrid office workers reveal that for many, the office has become a much-needed break from the distractions of home life. The study, of 1,000 Brits, commissioned by Access Self Storage, finds that workers now appreciate the office environment more than ever, citing fewer distractions, increased collaboration, and better opportunity to socialise.
The poll found:
44% of those surveyed said that being in the workplace makes them more productive, given the challenges of working from home distractions
39% of hybrid workers believe it’s easier to collaborate with colleagues when in the office
Distractions at Home
Home life can be full of distractions, and the results highlighted several common interruptions;
A fifth of respondents (20%) find themselves distracted by their children’s demands
27% cited their pets as a major distraction
Other interruptions include deliveries or doorbells ringing (33%) and the temptation to scroll through social media (22%)
The presence of a partner at home is another common distraction, with 23% of workers reporting that their partner’s presence makes it difficult to focus. Of those, 67% say they are distracted by conversations about non work related topics, and 41% are frustrated by their partner “banging around in the kitchen.”
Interestingly, two-thirds (66%) of respondents say they intentionally go into the office to escape these home based distractions.
The Need for Balance: Office as a Space to Reset
Access Self Storage Kings Cross, which offers local flexible office space, emphasised the importance of separating work life from home life: “It’s crucial to have a workspace that allows you to focus and maintain a healthy balance between personal and professional commitments. This research shows that there are significant benefits to being in the office, especially for those whose home environment can sometimes feel chaotic” said the Store General Manager.
The survey also found;
Nearly seven in 10 (69%) of respondents believe that being in the office environment, surrounded by colleagues, is beneficial for career development
A third of those surveyed (31%) said they work in the office to better separate work and home life
30% prefer the superior desk setups and resources for their office preference
A surprising 26% of respondents appreciate the change of scenery that the office provides
Ideal Work-from-Office Balance
The majority of workers (25%) selected three days a week in the office as the ideal balance between home and office working, whilst 18% of those surveyed believe that two days a week would be best, while only 4% are eager to return to five days a week in the office.
For many employees, the office is more than just a place to work, it’s a space to reset and refocus. The survey shows that, without the interruptions of home life, workers can enter a more productive flow, collaborate with colleagues, and enjoy the structure that an office environment provides.
