Psychologist weighs in on Mason Mount’s new Bleach Blonde Barnet

Whilst Mason Mount’s football future might be the talk of the town, his recent instagram picture showing off his new bleach blonde hair has certainly had tongues wagging, with UK Google searches for ‘Mason Mount new hair’ and ‘bleach blonde hair men’ up by 180% and 160% respectively. UK’s Number 1 blonding brand, Jerome Russell, have teamed up with renowned psychologist, Dr. Meg Arroll, to understand what Mason’s new blonde ‘do could mean for his future, as well as Celebrity Hairstylist Jason Collier revealing how to get the look at home.

Dr Meg Arroll says: “A drastic change can boost confidence as it makes someone stand out from the crowd, to gain attention and positive feedback. Any change to our appearance can have a significant impact on how we feel about ourselves, including how confident we feel. These tweaks to hair, clothing and overall ‘look’ can also signal to the wider world beliefs around our identity and how we’d like to be viewed by others. The important part here is how this change makes us feel about ourselves and this new look could be a boost to self-belief, trickling over to the game. This might in theory not only affect a person’s game but impact the way their teammates and opposing teams view them.

In a world full of things beyond our control, changing our hair is something that we can do – and have fun with. Blonde hair is also associated with summer and the carefree time during the warmest and sunniest part of the year. Hence, we can use these visual cues to boost mood which is key to confidence.”

Celebrity hairstylist, and Brand Educator for Bblonde, Jason Collier says, “Bleach blonde, Ken Blonde has had a real revival this year. It’s great to see this trend really taking traction with men also because blonde is much easier to maintain for men. Men’s hair typically bleaches better because it’s generally shorter. Short hair has an easier time bleaching as the heat from the scalp makes the bleach process so much faster. It’s also easier to get an even colour since there is less hair to contend with. If you want to achieve this look at home you’ll need to the Bleach Blonde Kits by Jerome Russell (£6.79 Superdrug).”

Step 1
“Read instructions carefully before starting and don’t forget your gloves. Mix the Jerome Russell Maximum Blonding Kit as per instructions.

Bblonde Bleach Blonde Blonding Kits are formulated to work best on light brown to dark brown hair, and have a conditioning shampoo to cleanse and condition, leaving hair vibrant, and strong. It is also formulated with avocado oil for enhanced hydration and shine, leaving hair looking and feeling healthy. Bleach Blonde 1 lifts up to 8-9 shades, Bleach Blonde 2 lifts up to 6-7 shades, if you have dark brown hair opt for kit 1.”

Step 2

“Divide hair into sections to ensure it can all be coated evenly. Sections should be about 1/4 inch for proper saturation. If your hair is cropped, you can skip this step.”

Step 3

“One thing to know before you begin is that the bleach is applied in two stages: first from the mid-length of your hair to the ends, which is then rinsed and followed by an all-over bleach. This is because the inch of hair closest to the scalp will become significantly lighter much quicker than the rest of the hair. If this is your first-time bleaching start with your ends and then apply to your roots. If you are applying to re-growth, and your ends are lighter, then start with your roots before applying to your ends.

So on dry hair, start at the front and apply the mixture 3cm away from the scalp, through to the ends of the hair. Leave this on for 15 minutes and then apply to the root area.”

Step 4

“Leave to develop for no longer than 90 minutes, recommended development time is between 25-45 minutes. Ensure you do a hair strand test before to really nail the development time. Once the bleach mixture has been left on your hair for the indicated time, rinse out thoroughly.”

Step 5

“Apply the Jerome Russell Deep Conditioning Shampoo included in your Bleach Blonde Kit. Rinse thoroughly.”

Step 6

“Dry and style as usual for blinding blonde results! Maintenance wise, maintaining bleached hair is different to natural hair. Expect to touch up your roots approximately every 6 weeks, if you don’t want them to show (sooner if you cut your hair often.)

Lastly, to avoid unwanted yellow tones, blonde hair will need regular maintenance with a purple pigmented shampoo (Jerome Russell Bblonde Intense Silver No Yellow Shampoo, £9.99 Superdrug), to keep brassiness at bay.”
