Research shows that the UK are seriously worried about their drinking habits right now
Searches for ‘What are the symptoms of drinking too much alcohol?’ have gone up a huge 156% in comparison to this time last year, most likely down to the British lockdown enforcement.
Digital marketing agency, Liberty Marketing, looked into the search volume behind alcohol-related terms and found that majority of searches have hugely increased in comparison to March last year, including ‘Am I an alcoholic?’ which has worryingly gone up by 42%.
The question ‘Do I drink too much?’ has also gone up a staggering 192% in comparison to April last year, research finds.
Searches for ‘Alcohol delivery’ has grown by 453% in comparison to ‘Food delivery’ which had only grown by 61% since last year, despite supermarket delivery slots being heavily sought after by the UK.
Meanwhile, searches for specific types of alcohol deliveries had also increased dramatically since last March:
Spirit delivery – 434%
Order cheap alcohol – 371%
Beer delivery – 317%
Wine delivery – 312%
Cheap beer – 233%
Beer subscription – 130%
One in five Brits have admitted to drinking more since lockdown began on March 23rd, according to Alcohol Change, while UK supermarkets have also reportedly sold 30% more alcohol than normal since then.
GWI’s Coronavirus Research also suggests that the UK are more likely to order alcohol online than any other European country.
Doctor Aragona Giuseppe, GP and Medical Advisor at Prescription Doctor, says:
“The UK’s alcohol intake increase is a cause for concern as we know how detrimental alcohol can be to our health. Adding a larger consumption of alcohol into the mix will be even more detrimental to a person’s mental wellbeing and could promote anxiety, depression, and a feeling of mental isolation.
“Those that are drinking excessively may feel hungover most days, have a headache from dehydration, may feel tired all the time due to a disturbed sleep, have an inability to concentrate on work and it may also make them irritable and cause arguments with those they’re self-isolating with. Not to mention promoting conditions such as alcoholism and addiction.”
Members of the UK that are worried about their alcohol intake during lockdown are advised to visit Drink Aware and take the self-assessment test.
