Four of the eleven play for Manchester United, two for Manchester City and Liverpool, one for Chelsea, Tottenham and Borussia Dortmund, respectively.

In goal, a shock selection is Manchester United’s Dean Henderson. The young ‘keeper managed to gain some invaluable game-time in the United team towards the end of the season, resulting in more online searches of his name (246k) than any other English goalie.

In what is possibly the most hotly-contested spot, Trent Alexander-Arnold makes his way in at right back. The Liverpool full back – who has enjoyed a strong end to a difficult year – has 246,000 searches a month which puts him well ahead of Chelsea’s Recce James, who was next on 201,000.

At left back, despite his strong resurgence over the past 12 months, Luke Shaw misses out to Ben Chilwell. The Chelsea defender, who has been ever present for the Blues this season, forces his way into the starting eleven with 201,000 searches.

The most Googled centre back pairing is two players who have both had excellent seasons for their respective clubs. Harry Maguire – who faces a race against time to be fit for the tournament after incurring an ankle injury toward the end of Manchester United’s season – secures a centre half spot with just under half a million searches. He’s positioned alongside his cross-city rival, John Stones, who has become a brick wall in Manchester City’s defence this year – he also has 450k searches each month.

Into the midfield and Phil Foden’s 26 goals and assists this year means he puts himself at centre stage for Euro 2020 with 450k searches a month. That’s the same number as Jesse Lingard who has reinvented himself at West Ham United in the second half of the season – but will that be enough for him to get into the eleven? The final midfield berth is taken by Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson, who’s had to fill in at centre back due to his club’s injury woes, but he makes his way into the most Googled England midfield with 201k searches – more than any other sitting player.

The most searched forward was comfortably Jadon Sancho (823k) and is perhaps not surprising given he’s been the centre of transfer talk all season about a big-money move to Manchester United. Next, making his way into the team is Marcus Rashford, who has produced notably on and off the pitch over this past year, resulting in 673k searches of his name a month. That’s the same number England’s captain and talisman Harry Kane has amassed each month too, the Spurs star has 34 in 53 games for his country, as well as a Golden Boot to his name at the 2018 World Cup, as he figureheads this eleven.

That means there’s no room for the likes of Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount, Jack Grealish and Mason Greenwood who all miss out here.

In addition, the research also looked at the most searched players from teams at the tournament.
