‘Rishi isn’t dithering, he’s actually delivering,’ says Tory MP Sir Robert Goodwill

PRIME Minister Rishi Sunak is delivering on his promises on economic growth, according to senior Conservative MP Sir Robert Goodwill.

The chair of the House of Commons environment committee was commenting on claims from Labour that the PM was effectively “squatting” in Downing Street ahead of a general election.

He told GB News: “Well, strong words maybe, no strong policies. I’m still no wiser on what they would actually do in policy.

“Their big policy was £28 billion of green investment. They’re now saying, ‘well, we might not be able to do that in our first term’, which is probably not at all…

“I would say that Rishi isn’t dithering, he’s actually delivering and people will get the tax cut at the end of this month. We’ve got the budget coming up, which hopefully we’ll get some more tax cuts there, and you can now I’m told get a fixed rate mortgage at 4%.”

In a discussion with Martin Daubney, he continued: “Because we’ve got on top of inflation, interest rates are coming down and that looks like a sustainable position.

“I think the economy is improving and I think that’s what worries Starmer, that’s why he wants an election so soon, because he knows things are starting to get better.”

Fellow Conservative MP Justin Tomlinson said: “Gordon Brown, he managed to sort of lock himself in, shut the curtains and hope nobody would notice he was still there. That’s what squatting is.

“This is a question of whether we go early or very early. So if we were to go in May or sooner, that’s very early, if we go in the autumn, that’s still an early election, well before the end of the five year term…

“They [Labour] aren’t yet ready for a general election, you require a manifesto and a manifesto requires policies.

“They haven’t even yet squared off how they will pay for their £28 billion net zero commitments year on year without hiking up taxes in a traditional Labour government way.”
