Rose Infused Manure Could Be a Hit for City Gardeners

Gardeners are being offered rose scented manure for the very first time – so they can give their flower beds a boost without offending their neighbour’s noses.

Online garden centre GardeningExpress.co.uk is offering the rose petal, lavender and rosemary infused horse manure compost in what they claim is a world first.

Rotted horse manure has been used by farmers for boosting crops since the middle ages, but its pungent aroma has meant it has been less popular with gardeners in residential areas.

But the team at GardeningExpress.co.uk believe they have solved the problem by infusing the rotted manure with a secret organic formula mix of water, rose petals, lavender and rosemary – often distilled and used in a similar way through the perfume industry.

The addition of the new ingredients, along with the time involved to create the product, means that the new rose scented manure compost doesn’t come cheap, with gardeners having to fork out £199 for a 60 litre bag.

This means the rose manure is around 20 times more expensive than regular farmyard manure from a local garden centre, which typically retails at around £10 for the same amount.

But the team at GardeningExpress.co.uk believe city gardeners will be willing to pay a premium to keep their neighbours happy.

The online garden centre is expecting a rush of orders from customers in London and other towns and cities across the UK.

GardeningExpress.co.uk founder Chris Bonnett said: “When it comes to boosting plant growth you really can’t do much better than good old fashioned manure spread over the beds to enrich the soil with nutrients.

“But as anyone who has ever enjoyed a drive in the country knows, freshly spread manure has a rather unpleasant side effect.

“Not to put too fine a point upon it, the stuff stinks.

“That’s why manure compost has never really taken off with urban gardeners. It’s a shame because it would do wonders for flower beds. But if you live in a town or city you have to consider the neighbours and no one wants to be responsible for making their entire road stink.

“So we thought we would find a solution to this problem. It’s taken a lot of experimentation with different flowers and herbs but we believe we have developed the ultimate pleasant smelling manure using rosemary, lavender and rose petals.

“After investing a lot of time and effort to perfect our formula we are confident we can offer gardeners a pleasant-smelling 100% organic manure which they can spread on their gardens throughout spring and summer without the fear of offending their neighbours.

“Even on the hottest days this manure should retain its pleasing aroma. It really does smell like roses.

“It’s the perfect product for any keen gardener living close to neighbours. No matter what size their garden is, from a window box to a large city plot, this manure will give it a boost.

“We understand it is more expensive than standard manure but we firmly believe many gardeners will think it’s worth paying the extra to make their garden smell good as well as look good. After all, what price can you put on neighbourly relations?”
