A 12-year-old boy in Oxfordshire has won a competition to name Barratt and David Wilson Homes’ brand new development in Abingdon.

Schoolboy Harry Wigginton chose the name of the new development which is now being proudly introduced as Abbey Fields, following a competition he entered at Long Furlong Primary School, where he was previously a Year 6 pupil.

The five star homebuilder enlisted the help of the local school children to name the development located on Dunmore Road.

After receiving a variety of inventive naming suggestions, the developer chose Harry as the competition winner and presented him with a £30 book token as a thank you gift. Harry will now be able to see his winning name written on all of the development’s signs and promotional material as his suggestion becomes a lasting legacy in Abingdon.

When deciding on their naming suggestions, the pupils were encouraged to consider the local area, most notably the history of Abingdon and its villages, landmarks and famous figures. Harry’s suggestion was made following the presence of an abbey in Abingdon, which was supposedly founded in the year 675.

Campbell Gregg, Managing Director at Barratt and David Wilson Homes Southern, said: “When naming our new development in Abingdon, we turned to the pupils at Long Furlong Primary School for their inspiration.

“We’re now pleased to announce that we’ll be calling the development Abbey Fields, thanks to Harry’s wonderful suggestion.

“At Barratt and David Wilson Homes, we strive to ensure we provide more than just quality new properties, and competitions such as these help to include members of the community in the homebuilding process.”
