Seven Simple Solutions for an Energy Efficient Workspace

Employers can ensure they’re running an energy efficient work environment as seven simple solutions to save electricity and cash have been revealed.

Flexible workspace specialists  Officio  have revealed the best ways to help save both money and the environment in the workplace.

With many individuals making changes in their day-to-day life to help improve the environment it is something which employers should also be encouraging whilst at work.

Tips include making the most of natural light, turning off unused appliances and choosing the right light bulbs.

A spokesperson for  Officio  said: “Making lots of small changes to the way a company uses energy can make a big difference, both in terms of lowering bills and lessening the impact on the environment.

“Quite often leading by example can be a good way to start encouraging employees to start thinking about their own impact whilst at work.

“Most importantly, these changes are all very simple and shouldn’t make a big difference to routines.”

These are  Officio ‘s seven simple solutions to create an energy efficient workspace:

1. Turn it off

Turning everything off when you leave the office at night, such as computers and lights, can save a lot of money and energy. A surprising amount of businesses leave electrical equipment on sleep mode, which can have a large impact on energy bills.

2. Lightbulbs

Energy efficient lightbulbs could reduce energy usage by up to 38%. Although a larger up-front cost when replacing old lightbulbs, it’s a long-term investment for both the bank account and the environment.

3. Motion detectors

Lighting which automatically turns on and off when no one’s in the room is a simple way to save energy. Synchronising fans and lighting can also help in rooms such as the bathroom.

4. Natural lighting

Keeping blinds open and using the most of natural lighting means that not as many people will be reaching for the light switch. Natural lighting can also have a positive impact on the atmosphere in the office.

5. Heating

Programming the heating so it’s on whilst employees are in the office and turns off during the night can help save energy. Having it set to come on intermittently will also help to keep the office at a constant temperature.

6. Insulation

Ensuring ceilings and walls are well insulated can have a huge impact on both costs and energy. It means that when your heating is turned on it’s taking longer to escape the building so less energy is needed to keep the rooms warm.

7. Upgrade appliances

Old fridges and printers could be a drain on energy and bills. Newer appliances with high energy ratings can save money and be much more efficient. Ensuring the appropriate sized appliance is bought for the company – such as a small fridge instead of a large one – can also help.
