Sister Midnight FM goes LIVE, from a new studio– meet the residents & Jazz On Air takeover, this week

Sister Midnight, the not-for-profit co-operative organisation based in South East London, announces a brand new physical studio that will become the focal point of their community radio station, Sister Midnight FM (SMFM). This studio is a temporary space and will be integrated into the community music venue once they open doors- growing and developing as the venue grows and develops.

Sister Midnight FM (SMFM) has a unique focus on SE London and the same strong commitment to community benefit and inclusivity that is the foundation of Sister Midnight. New shows also launched with the opening of the studio inc. Baesianz, Dancing Family Records, dialE, hate zine, Kiran Kai, Lemon Lounge, Maxwell Owin, Natty Wylah, Stay Jaya, Otta, Peace & Justice Project, Prima Queen, Prishita, WOOM, Goat Girl + much more.

Since 2021, Sister Midnight has been campaigning to create Lewisham’s first community owned music venue, bringing a much needed cultural community hub to the local area. This year they have secured a 10 year lease for a venue in Catford (read more below) and are in the process of transforming it into the grassroots venue which champions accessibility, inclusivity and community benefit.

Sister Midnight FM forms part of Sister Midnight’s strategy to become a cultural incubator for South East London, utilising the station as a platform for artistic development, sharing new work, and increasing participation in local music culture – especially for those who face barriers to physical participation. Radio shows will host a wide array of musicians, collectives, community groups, DJs, activists and more. SMFM invites the local community to have their say on what they imagine might be possible on the station – anyone can apply for a broadcast slot, to join the radio team or offer their opinion.

EVENTS COMING UP:
This week— from Thursday 24 April, SMFM kicks off the first in a new series of monthly takeovers with Jazz On Air – broadcasting live from our new studio on Sister Midnight FM. For this first edition, SMFM is spotlighting the artists and tastemakers shaping Europe’s jazz scene inc. Allysha Joy, Marysia Osu, Move 78, Rohan Rakhit, Sans Soucis, Coby Sey, d’monk, Lex Blondin, Tara Lily and Last Nubian. From harp-led nu-jazz to hip-hop, neo-soul, and electronic – tune in for the freshest cuts from this vibrant movement.

Next week— on Thursday 1 May, Sister Midnight presents is back at Piehouse, with live performances from Donna Thompson, BEBELUNA, and Kieron Boothe, a lineup not to be missed -soulful vocals, alt-R&B, Jazz and lyricism.

With the big support from Arts Council, these monthly residencies will run for the next 5 months, meaning Sister Midnight can bring the local community a series of affordable shows with all funds going towards the running of SMFM, their community-run radio station.
