THE BBC are “frightened of their own shadow” according to the channel’s former pundit Mark Lawrenson.
In an exclusive interview with GB News the ex-Liverpool ace was asked what can be concluded from the row.
He said: “I think it teaches us that we’ve all got a view and we’ve all got an opinion.
“We wouldn’t have had this row if there was no Twitter and Instagram and all those kinds of things. But what that’s done is it’s given everybody a voice.
“It’s come down on the side of Gary. With the BBC, they’re frightened of their own shadow. That’s the problem…
“It’s just this thing where he had the audacity to actually say what he was thinking, and he was quite right in saying what he was thinking, but maybe not just the original line about,, Germany in the 1930s.”
In a discussion with Andrew Pierce and Bev Turner, Lawrenson said there were no guidelines on use of social media when he worked for the BBC.
“You were just you were just left to get on it and I think the idea was you’re intelligent enough not to step over the line.
“I mean, I’ve made one or two comments myself, but nothing like this.
“So no, there was never any guidance, but I think there was a massive, massive trust and you just realised you worked for the BBC and you’re always very, very aware that you were sort of on call all the time.”
He continued: “To be fair, he certainly stuck to his guns. He’s not backed down and it would appear that the BBC have certainly gone down on one knee to him.
“I didn’t agree with what he originally said but with all the rest of this stuff, I can’t believe the fuss.
Meanwhile Lawrenson also joked that Lineker, and all other football pundits should be sacked from the BBC.
Asked if he watched the last pundit-less broadcast of Match of the Day, he quipped: “I think it was brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
“I think we should sack the whole lot of them.
With a grin he added: “The highest paid person at the BBC!? Get rid of him!”
