The UK’s ultimate burger has been revealed!
Gherkin lovers across the UK will be ‘relishing’ the chance to chow down on Britain’s perfect burger, which has been revealed in celebration of International Burger Day (May 28th).
The nationwide study by Foodhub, one of the UK’s leading food ordering apps, reveals that almost a quarter of Brits (24%) voted the love it or hate it gherkin as a must-have burger topping.
While the inclusion of a gherkin may come as a shock to some picky pickle haters, there are no surprises as to the number one burger filling. Over half of the UK (54%) chose beef as their filling of choice, with chicken and veggie burgers falling way behind with 6% of the votes each.
However, it seems that participants think that cheeseburgers are a necessity, with almost half of Brits (44%) opting to include a cheese slice on top of their burger filling. Surprisingly, even more popular was lettuce – which narrowly beat cheese into the top three with 45% of people choosing the salad component as one of their go-to burger toppings.
In terms of sauciness, there could only be one winner, as over a third of the nation chose ketchup, compared to 8% opting for BBQ sauce. Narrowly missing out as the condiment of choice was mayonnaise (31%) followed by mustard (14%).
Ardian Mula, Foodhub spokesperson, said: “It seems people are sticking to what they know when it comes to a burger. With the classic combination of beef, bread roll, lettuce and cheese making the list of Brit’s favourite burger toppings.
“However, it is interesting to see the vegetarian burger coming in at such a small percentage. This is a market that is certainly growing exponentially, and it seems those in our capital city are the biggest fans of the vegetarian option, as over one in ten Londoners opted for a veggie burger compared to the rest of the country.
“Here at Foodhub, we offer a wide range of burger options to suit everybody’s taste buds, so customers can enjoy tucking into the dark horse gherkin or a fried egg if that’s their topping of choice!”
When it comes to types of burgers, 10% of 25-34-year-olds would choose a chicken burger as their classic burger of choice, but a staggering 63% of 45-54-year-olds would prefer beef.
And the UK home of the fried egg burger (burger topped with a fried egg) has been revealed. Almost one in five locals from Wrexham in North Wales would opt for a fried egg on top of their burger.
