Twitter study reveals the biggest Oscar nomination snubs of 2022. according to the public
It’s that time of year again, where the very best in film come together to celebrate a year of cinematic blockbusters at the 94th Academy Awards.
But, before the stars take to the red carpet and eagerly wait for the coveted statues, the nominees for each of the 24 categories are announced.
On the 8th of February, the nominees for each category were announced to the public, containing the names of actors, actresses, films, directors and other key people in the running to gain global recognition for their contributions.
The top categories, or the “Big Five”, awards at the Oscar’s consist of Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Screenplay.
But while many fans’ favourites appear on the list of nominees, there were many snubs in this year’s line-up that have been dually noted on social media worldwide.
To find out which snubs fans are most outraged by, SeatPlan has been hard at work analysing which have caused the most outrage on social media in the first 24 hours following the announcement.
Firstly, for this year’s Best Actress category, votes flooded in for Jessica Chastain in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Olivia Colman in The Lost Daughter, Penelope Cruz in Parallel Mothers, Nicole Kidman in Being the Ricardos and Kristen Stewart in Spencer.
However, despite receiving nods from the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards and the Screen Actors Guild, Lady Gaga’s performance as Patrizia Reggiani missed out on Oscar nominations – to the outrage of 2,414 fans, who took to Twitter to vent.
Other notable snubs included Ruth Negga in Passing (149), Jennifer Hudson in Respect (106), Alana Haim in Licorice Pizza (83) and Rachel Zegler (41).
Despite being primed to become the youngest EGOT winner, Broadway composer Lin-Manuel Miranda was the most snubbed, with 128 angry tweets voicing their opinions on how his film Encanto should have been recognised in this category.
Instead, the Hamilton star was eclipsed by Javier Bardem (Being the Ricardos), Benedict Cumberbatch (The Power of the Dog), Andrew Garfield (tick, tick… BOOM!), Will Smith (King Richard) and Denzel Washington (The Tragedy of Macbeth).
It wasn’t just the theatre legend’s snub that got fans worked up either, as Jared Leto in House of Gucci was the star of 112 tweets. Also, in the top five snubbed were Timothee Chamalet in Don’t Look Up (92), Bradley Cooper in Licorice Pizza (59) and Nightmare Alley and Zachary Levi in American Underdog (51).
And for Best Picture, nominations rolled in for Belfast, Coda, Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story.
Much to everyone’s surprise, Spider-Man: No Way Home, which has a domestic gross of $748 million so far, didn’t make the cut and 269 fans (and counting) have had something to say about it.
Equally, but not quite as upset, were fans of The Last Duel (145), Passing (144), The French Dispatch (134) and The Green Knight (116).
But what about the people behind the camera?
Well, every year one director is awarded an Oscar for their work behind the camera – with some of the most notable directors, such as Steven Speilberg winning 32 so far.
Speilberg is once again in the category for his work on West Side Story, accompanied by Jane Campion (The Power of the Dog), Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza), Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car) and Kenneth Branagh (Belfast).
Missing out on a place in the top five, Dennis Villeneuve isn’t in the running, despite his film Dune being among the most-nominated films of 2022 – causing distaste for upwards of 380 fans in the first 24 hours alone.
Also included in the top five most snubbed directors were Guillermo del Toro for Nightmare Alley (179), Ridley Scott for The Last Duel (37), Aaron Sorkin for Being the Ricardos (26) and Rebecca Hall for Passing (15).
