VALENTINE’S DAY VIBRATIONS: EBAY REVEALS 49% SPIKE IN SEX TOY SALES

With the most romantic day of the year fast approaching, the nation appears to be prepping for those good Valentine’s vibrations. Whether it’s couples looking to experiment, or singles embracing self-love, new data* from eBay has revealed that Brits are feeling the buzz, with eBay UK seeing nearly a 50% increase in new sex toy sales in the first week of February when compared to January.

A new sex toy was sold every minute last year on eBay UK, from a host of big outlets including Ann Summers, and small businesses like BuzzPinky, with the average price of a brand new sex toy being £10.61. However when it comes to the toys of the future, it seems that sustainable sex is the new buzz term, with “sustainable sex toys” breaking into the top 10 list of products within the category for the first time ever in 2020.

According to eBay data, Monday at 9pm is the most popular time of the week to purchase sex toys, as people look to get rid of the Monday Blues. Outside of love-filled February, October sees one of the biggest spikes in sex toy sales, as Brits prove that you don’t need a Boo to enjoy Halloween.

Discussing the growth of the category online, a spokesperson for eBay UK says: “We have seen an extraordinary 81% increase in sales within the category between 2017 and 2019, likely thanks to shows such as Sex Education, which have brought sex to the fore of the public mindset. To meet this ever growing demand, we are proud to have a number of specialised sellers driving this category forward, whose specialised knowledge, support, and products are helping to meet the demand of our customers.”

When it comes to the locations that love sex toys the most , Londoners prove that it really is more fun when you go down south, as they take the trophy for buying the most sex toys in the UK. A close second is the West Midlands, who bought a sex toy every 13 minutes in 2019, leaving Derbyshire and Norfolk trailing at the bottom.
