Brits looking to liven up their Veganuary menu have been given suggestions on the best international dishes to spice up meal times.
The international experts at Busuu have compiled the tastiest vegan dishes from around the globe.
They’ve looked at the dishes that will tease the taste buds and keep non-vegans interested in following the lifestyle when January comes to an end.
Among the suggestions are delicious sushi rolls from Japan, mouthwatering vegan paella from Spain and a vegan version of delicious pastéis de nata (Portuguese egg tarts).
Vegan Paella, Spain, Paella De Verduras
A spokesperson from Busuu said: “Veganuary is a great time to try new foods and whilst there may be a perception that other nations have a more meat- and dairy-based diet, that’s not always the case.
“We’ve looked some tasty vegan dishes that are staplest., plusa few classics, like tarte tatin (the French upside-down apple tart) which with one simple ingredient change, becomes a mouthwatering vegan dessert.”
Here are Busuu’s recommendations for the best vegan dishes from around the world:
Poland – Stuffed Cabbage Rolls
Traditional stuffed cabbage rolls usually contain beef or lamb. Replace the meat with grains and lentils and bake in a delicious tomato based sauce for a truly delicious vegan dish.
China – Vegan Dumplings
Rather than filling your dumplings with pork, use a vegan meat replacement, shiitake mushrooms and cabbage for this Chinese feast.
Japan – Sushi Rolls
For vegan sushi rolls, swap the fish for marinated tofu – try marinating in a mix of tomato puree, cayenne pepper and paprika for a delicious flavour and baking in the oven. For the vegetables in your sushi roll, try carrot batons, pepper and cucumber.
Spain – Vegan Paella
Simply replace the meat and fish with vegetables if you’re making a mouth watering paella. Keep it simple with onions, peppers and garlic. And remember, don’t stir your paella while it’s cooking.
Turkey – Roasted Red Pepper Hummus
Hummus is a vegan favourite. Try making your own using chickpeas, tahini, roasted red pepper and garlic, lemons and olive oil. Enjoy with crackers, on crusty fresh bread or as a dip.
Italy – Vegan Pizza
Italian dishes are great for vegetarians and vegan with any host of vegetables working well with pasta and pizza. Try making your own vegan pizza by replacing the cheese with courgettes and a drizzle of oil. Alternatively strip right back to pizza marinara. And if you’re a cheese lover, give vegan cheese a try.
France – Tarte Tatin
This quintessential French dessert can be turned into a delicious vegan pudding simply by replacing the butter in the pasty with a vegan, dairy free alternative. Serve with vegan vanilla ice-cream.
Portugal – Pastéis de Nata
This traditional Portuguese Egg Tart can be turned vegan. Instead of using eggs and milk, try a combination of coconut milk, soya cream and soya milk.
