‘Video Games Industry’s illustrative only approach to Musical Scores is Holding the Sector Back’ Says BAFTA Nominated Composer

Without the music supporting the perception of the gameworld, a player’s immersion into the story and backing up the game narrative, the gameplay can become dry, and maybe less enjoyable.

“Music can be part of the gameplay as much as the AI, the physics, the lighting can. We have passed the time when music was mostly illustrative and the new generation of games will showcase new approaches on how to use music as a key feature for the player’s experience”, says Olivier Deriviere.

This is the methodology that Olivier uses. Especially for an action packed, adventure game such as A Plague Tale: Requiem, where the game is designed to take you not only on a quest, but also through the inner journey of a character. Overcoming the violence of their time and facing the morality of actions, the immersive aspect of music becomes even more important.

Using sophisticated composition and innovative approaches to connecting music with gameplay, Olivier uses his classically trained skills to blend and manipulate traditional musical elements with unorthodox sound techniques. This results in an authentic score for A Plague Tale: Reqiuem’s that fully immerses the player in the gameplay and story.

With a disruptive approach to music and continued focus on building the player’s journey, Olivier has collaborated with Grammy winning Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir & Eric-Maria Couturier to create a hypnotic soundtrack. The choir is one of the best-known Estonian ensembles in the world and Eric-Maria Couturier is a distinguished member of the Ensemble intercontemporain.

Not only this, but the soundtrack has also been recorded by Grammy winning recording engineer, John Kurlander who has previously worked on soundtracks for Lord of the Rings and The Beatles and has been mastered by multi-Grammy nominated Shawn Hatfield. Thereby cementing Olivier’s attention to detail towards building the best musical experience possible.

With the launch of the game, also comes the launch of the digital soundtrack. The original OST contains 34 tracks, which are now available on digital platforms such as Spotify & Apple Music. An additional 37 tracks, which are currently exclusive on Bandcamp will become available as an extended version on digital platforms.
