Wimbledon lights up Empire State Building in celebration of The Championships

Wimbledon’s colours lit up the world-famous Empire State Building last night in celebration of The Championships. For the second year, Wimbledon has brought the best of Britain to New York City with The Hill in New York, a recreation of the iconic landmark where fans can enjoy a traditional Wimbledon experience from afar during the last three days of The Championships.

Following her Saturday performance at The Hill in New York, Spice Girl and Brit Award winner Melanie C flipped the switch to illuminate the Empire State Building in Wimbledon’s colours of purple, green and white.

Presented by Barclays, Wimbledon’s Official Banking Partner, the ‘When You’re Gone’ singer performed singles from her solo career, along with Spice Girls’ top hits at The Hill in New York on Saturday afternoon.

For the final day of The Championships, visitors to The Hill in New York will be able to watch the Gentlemen’s Singles Final, just as if they were on The Hill at Wimbledon. Guests will be surrounded by Wimbledon’s signature florals that bring to life ‘tennis in an English garden’ and greeted by Wimbledon stewards. The food and drink offer includes Sipsmith Strawberry Smash Gin & Tonic created with Wimbledon strawberries at the English Garden Bar, iconic picnic hampers, traditional British fish & chips, and a Barclays’ ice cream truck. The tennis action will be complemented by musical entertainment, traditional garden games and Babolat’s pop-up tennis court, with daily Wimbledon prizes on offer.

Watching The Championships on The Hill first became a Wimbledon tradition in the 1990s. Following its unveiling in 1997 alongside the new No.1 Court, it became the home of ‘Henmania’, as the former world No.4 Tim Henman held the British public’s heart on his racket for the best part of a decade. Re-christened ‘Murray Mound’, ‘Heather’s Hill’, and even ‘The Emma-layas’, The Hill is where fans can experience Wimbledon’s unique atmosphere together.
