Zero Waste Week with Cotswolds Distillery, Mermaid Gin and Greenall’s Gin

Zero Waste Week is an award-winning, grassroots annual awareness campaign that takes place both online and on the ground. The campaign aims to help reduce landfill waste, to save money, preserve resources and protect the environment.

This year Zero Waste Week runs from the 2nd to 6th of September and premium spirit brands Cotswolds Distillery, Mermaid Gin and Greenall’s Gin are leading the way in maximising taste and minimising waste through a number of key initiatives.

Cotswolds Distillery

In July this year, Cotswolds Distillery unveiled its new bio-diverse Wetlands Ecological Treatment System, located on their own site. The brand new system naturally processes three quarters of the waste water from the Distillery’s whisky making, creates a bio-diverse habitat for local wildlife, as well as reduces the amount of tanker trucks and local traffic. The creation of this system reduces the distillery’s waste by tens of thousands of litres per week.

The system uses a variety of plants and their natural biological processes to break down the chemical compounds deemed as contaminants in the waste streams. It has been carefully designed with multiple stages. The plants first bedded in August 2023, have now begun processing waste liquid from the whisky making. The clean water from this new treatment system is used to grow a coppice of willows which in turn will provide undisturbed shelter for habitat and wildlife.
