Love him or loathe him, Michael Owen has been one of the biggest names in football for 25 years and has moved from expert striker to expert pundit in the last few of those.

The former England legend has some impressive stats behind him as a player, but also some rather bizarre facts too.

With Owen having no real affinity to any of the clubs he’s played for, after all he failed at Real Madrid and made his name at Liverpool before later joining Manchester United, we decided to look into the strange side of the current BT Sport pundit, and there really is the weird and wonderful…

He’s never had a cup of tea

Football dressing rooms used to be built on cups of tea and during the good old days (pre-Premier League era), half time wouldn’t see kit men passing around energy drinks but rather an industrial kettle in the middle with cups to pour your brew into.

If Owen would have come through in those days, he’d have been left gasping as he revealed in his book he’d never had a cup of tea.

It’s absolutely crazy talk. He’s British. How can a British man in his now 40s have never had a cup of tea. What’s more, he’s only just learned to make one. Teabag, hot water and the drinkers preference on milk and sugar, Michael. You don’t need to learn that!

To add insult to injury, he’s never had a cup of coffee either…

He’s only seen 10 films

This just simply can’t be true. Back in 2014 he tweeted he’d just watched his eighth film, claiming he must have been bored #HateFilms.

It’s something that has certainly stuck with the star and a couple of years ago he went on to name the flicks he had seen, which were:

  1. Rocky IV
  2. Cool Runnings
  3. Ghost
  4. Sea Biscuit
  5. Karate Kid
  6. Creed
  7. Jurassic Park
  8. Heat
  9. Rocky I, II, II, V
  10. Forrest Gump

It’s a remarkable feat. He said about watching movies, “I just can’t get into them. I do try – someone will say, ‘Watch this film, it’s great’, and I’ll try but after half an hour, 40 minutes I can’t take it any longer.”

He doesn’t like music

And it appears films aren’t the only thing he doesn’t like, with the former wonder kid also not a fan of music. Similarly, he has claimed he’s only ever listened to seven albums in his life. Do you want to know what they are? Of course you do…

  1. Air – Moon Safari
  2. Dizzee Rascal – Boy in da Corner
  3. Elton John – Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
  4. Lily Allen – Alright, Still
  5. The Beatles – 1962-1966, aka The Red Album
  6. Ian Brown – Unfinished Monkey Business
  7. Jeff Wayne – Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version Of War Of The Worlds

It’s eclectic, we’ll certainly give him that. One thing we’re not sure on is if he actually likes any of those albums though. In fact, we’re not sure if he likes anything!

He likes bingo

Ahh, there we go. Michael Owen is a fan of bingo. Like much of the country, the former Newcastle striker has caught the bingo bug and has been seen enjoying a game of 90-ball bingo.

Of course, he offers his weekly pundit predictions and is certainly no stranger to having a flutter given he owns race horses, but it turns out that he’s a dab hand with a dabber in his hand too.

Perhaps that’s why he got moved on from his clubs so frequently, he was too busy trying to get Sergio Ramos into online bingo and Antonio Valencia out for a night out down the local bingo hall.
