Fashion Designer Niki Moyo:”My late mother is my driving force”

Niki Moyo is a London based Premium Womenswear Fashion Brand.

Born in Zimbabwe, she initially showed a flair for fashion and design when helping to create new outfits for her dolls helped by her mother, who was a great lover and supporter of the regional Arts and Craft movement at the time.

As a teenager, making her own clothes was a natural progression. Her design flair was confirmed when she raced ahead of other pupils at school when studying craftwork and Fashion and Fabrics. Deconstructing clothes to establish patterns and understand the various cuts for garments, swiftly confirmed a passion for clothes and fashion, heavily influenced by the culture of the region, combined with the exciting prospect of new global fashion trends.

It led to her taking a number of supplementary roles, helping her to formalise her industry education, and leading to initially securing a professional National Certificate in Clothing Technology. This acquiring a place at the National School of Art & Design, where she graduated from a National Diploma In Fashion Design and authored her first formal “Portfolio”.

The recognition of this work by the school’s experts resulted in her winning one of the highly sought after “Fashion Design Seats” at the school, she then secured an internship at the respected Edgars Group, the regional clothing market leader, who supply quality adult and children’s merchandise across Zimbabwe.

She was offered a permanent role at Edgars, initially as a Fashion Designer, and after a promotion to Product Coordinator on the back of the commercial success delivered for the brand and its sub-brands.

Niki Moyo’s proven and consistent excellence has led to her winning multiple awards in her Fashion career.

Niki gave us some insights.

Where does your drive come from?

Designing pieces that excel always gives me joy and a feeling of fulfillment, which motivates me to get better.

I am also fueled by the vision to fulfill my dream of being a fashion designer with a difference, offering premium high-quality designs that will help to boost women’s confidence, compliment both their bodies and unique personalities to a perfect fit. This is because I believe every woman deserves to be happy and confident in themselves and there is no better way to exhibit this confidence than expressing it with what you wear. The transformation in women’s feelings from my design work gives me a sense of pride and joy. I understand how this design dream coming true will make my mother fulfilled and proud, as I believe she’s the one that planted this seed in me but left too soon and never got to witness its success.  Saying how much she wanted this for me is an understatement.

The driving force and true identity for my creativity are influenced by a story. This could be carried on from my brand values, the inspiration of the collection, materials used and my personal background or life experiences.

I am aware of trends but my creativity is not trend driven. I may incorporate trends into my designs but they have to tell a unique story, which sets me apart from the rest.

I envisage a particular person who will wear my designs. I visualise their personal profile, their lifestyle which allows me to offer something that will be wearable, functional and most importantly is desired by the wearer.

What can we expect from you/your brand in 2018?

I am embracing the opportunities I may be presented with to develop my brand.

I am armed with my can-do attitude to grow this brand and you will see me officially launch my brand in 2018 as I’m already working on that process. Lastly, I am developing an online shopping website for my brand.
